Jonathan H. Wallace, of Columbiana county, contested the right of William McKinley, Jr., of Stark county, to a seat in the Sixty-seventh Congress, and was seated.

James E. Campbell, of Butler county, contested the right of Henry L. Morey, of the same county, to a seat in the Sixty-eighth Congress, and was seated.

Jacob Romeis, of Lucas county, contested the right of Frank H. Hurd, of the same county, to a seat in the Sixty-ninth Congress, and was seated.

Jonathan T. Updegraff, of Jefferson, a member of the Sixty-seventh Congress, died in 1881, and was succeeded by Joseph D. Taylor.

Winfield S. Kerr acted as Clerk, pro tem., pending the organization of the

Senate.

For President pro tem., Perry M. Adams received 18 votes; David M. Massie received 16 votes.

For Clerk, William A. Taylor received 19 votes; Thomas S. Hayes received 16 votes. Additional clerks were elected as follows:

For Sergeant-at-Arms, David H. Mortley received 19 votes; Dayton W. Glenn, 16 votes. The following assistants were elected :

First Assistant, Carlos E. Trevitt; Second Assistant, Wm. A. Varley.

There were numerous deaths among Senators during the period of the Sixtyninth General Assembly, the deaths being: Thomas Q. Ashburn, succeeded by John M. Pattison, from the Fourth District; John Zimmerman, succeeded by Hugh A. Hart, from the Seventeenth-Twenty-eighth Districts; Andrew J. Robertson, succeeded by James O. Amos, from the Twelfth District, and Perry M. Adams, from the Thirty-first District, who died after the close of the adjourned session.

During the Legislature, Senator Andrew J. Robertson, of the Twelfth District, died, and Hugh W. Thompson was elected to succeed him. On the day of his election, Mr. Thompson was believed to be dying, and he renounced the office, and James O. Amos, who had formerly served two terms from the Nineteenth District, was elected to fill the vacancy. Mr. Thompson subsequently recovered.

On the eighth of January, 1890, the two Houses met in joint assembly to witness the canvass of the vote at the preceding election, the result being:

Governor-James E. Campbell, 379.420; Joseph B. Foraker, 368,539; J. B. Helwig, 26,504; J. H. Rhodes, 1,048.

Lieutenant Governor-Wm. V. Marquis, 375,069; Elbert L. Lampson, 375,092; L. B. Logan, 26,587; Francis L. Rice, 1,120.

State Treasurer-John C. Brown, 377,103; William E. Boden, 373,640; D. N. Trowbridge, 26.547; David D. Marvin, 1,079.

Attorney General-David K. Watson, 377,138; Jesse M. Lewis 273,335; E. Jay Pinney, 26,439; William Baker, 1,140.

Wm. V. Marquis contested the election of Elbert L. Lampson for Lieutenant Governor before the Senate, and that body decided that he had a plurality of 122 of the legal votes cast, and seated him.

On the eighth of January, 1891, the two Houses met and the vote for Secretary of State was canvassed and declared to be:

Daniel J. Ryan, 363.550; Thaddeus E. Cromley, 352,597; Melancthon C. Lockwood, 23,837; Ezekiel T. Curtis, 1,753.
