Clement L. Vallandigham, of Montgomery county, contested the right of Lewis D. Campbell, of Butler county, to a seat in the Thirty-fifth Congress, and was seated.

The pace of progress was accellerated during the preceding decade.

The population rose from 1,519,329 in 1840 to 1,980,329 in 1850.

The values of real estate rose from $341,389,838 to $639,894,311; personalty from $98,487,502 to $248,408,290, and the taxable value of all forms of property from $439,876,340 to $888,302,601.

The total State revenues rose from $1,413,830 to $3,503,713, and the total of State and county revenues from $4,227,708 to $10,817,676.

The Senate organized by electing Dudley W. Rhodes Clerk, by a vote of 25, over Amos Layman, who received nine votes. M. L. Morrow, E. A. Higgins and Hamer Norton were elected Assistant Clerks and William D. Bickham Official Reporter.

Wm. M. Green was elected Sergeant-at-Arms, and J. W. Sands and John Wallace, Assistants.

Richard A. Harrison was later chosen as President pro tem.

There was one vacancy by death, Vance Robb, of Putnam and Henry, succeeded by David I. Broen.

On the second of February, 1860, the two Houses met in joint convention and balloted for a United States Senator as follows:

Senator Chase resigned the Senatorship to accept the position of Secretary of the Treasury under President Lincoln, and on the twenty-first of March, 1861, his successor was elected as follows:
