For President pro tem., Reese G. Richards received 21 votes and Basil W. Carlisle, 13 votes.

Governor-Charles Foster, 336,261; Thomas Ewing, 319,132; Gideon T. Stewart, 4,145; A. Sanders Piatt, 9,072; John Hood, 547. There were scattering, 13 votes.

Lieutenant Governor-Andrew Hickenlooper, 335,140; Americus V. Rice, 319,542; James W. Sharp, 4,334; Hugo Preyer, 9,566; James Crosby, 517. There were scattering, 22 votes.

State Treasurer-Joseph Turney, 335,670; Anthony Howells, 317,193; Elias Blair, 4,343; Chas. Jenkins, 11,222; Otto Bachman, 530. There were scattering, 51 votes.

State Auditor-John F. Oglevee, 335,184; Charles Reemelin, 317,412; M. J. Fanning, 4,337; Andrew Roy, 11,621; Joseph Mayhew, 523. There were scattering, 14

votes.

Attorney General-Geo. K. Nash, 336,100; Isaiah Pillars, 316,778; James R. Grogan, 10,937; S. B. Foster, 4,369. There were scattering, 437 votes.

On the fifth of January, the vote at the preceding October election for Secretary of State was canvassed in the presence of the two Houses, and the following result announced: Charles Townsend, 362,021; Wm. Lang, 343,016; Chas. A. Lloyd, 6,768; Wm. H. Doan, 2,185.

When the House met for organization, John C. Covert was designated as temporary Clerk.

For Speaker, Thos. A. Cowgill received 68 votes, and S. S. Bloom received 45.
For Speaker pro tem., J. A. Williamson received 68 votes, and James A. Estill, 44.
For Clerk, D. J. Edwards, 68 votes; Lewis A. Brunner, 45.

George W. Copelin was elected Journal Clerk and Charles Wheeler, Message Clerk, and the record does not disclose the remaining Clerks, nor are they indexed in the Journal.

For Sergeant-at-Arms, J. W. A. Gillespie received 68 votes, and Allen Beach, 45. G. W. Andrews was elected First, Abram Moore, Second and Fredrick Blenkner, Third Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms, the latter receiving a unanimous election, as was the case in all of his elections with a single exception.

On the thirteenth of January, 1880 the two Houses voted separately for United States Senator, and on the next day met in joint convention. The result was:

Mr. Garfield having received a majority of each House was declared elected.

On the twenty third of December, 1880, Mr. Garfield not having assumed the duties of the Senatorship, and having in the meantime been elected President of the United States, renounced the Senatorship, and on the eighteenth of January, 1881, the two Houses voted separately to fill the vacancy. The result of the balloting was:

Mr. Sherman having received a majority in each branch of the Legislature, was declared elected upon the reading of the Journals of the two Houses.

Many amendments to the Code of laws were adopted, and the larger portion of the two sessions were devoted thereto.

It was made unlawful to practice medicine and surgery without first obtaining a diploma from some medical college, except when physicians had been in recognized, reputable and continuous practice for a fixed period of time.

The act of the previous Legislature redistricting the State for the purpose of electing members of Congress, was repealed, and the act of April, 1872, previously noted, was revived.

Charles Townsend, of Athens, resigned, and was succeeded by Chas. L. Kurtz.

The result declared was: Governor-Charles Foster, 312,735; John W. Bookwalter, 288,426; Abram R. Ludlow, 16,597; John Seitz, 6,330. There were scattering, 138 votes.

Lieutenant Governor-Reese G. Richards, 314,100; Edgar M. Johnson, 288,266; Jason McVey, 16, 127; Charles Jenkins, 6,360. There were scattering, 34 votes.

State Treasurer-Joseph Turney, 316,232; A. P. Winslow, 286,59; Ferd. Schumacher, 15,824; W. F. Gloyd, 6,487. There were scattering. 125 votes.

Attorney General—Geo. K. Nash, 315,655; Frank C. Dougherty, 287,470; D. W. Gage, 15,655; G. N. Tuttle, 6,482. There were scattering, 67 votes.

On the third of January, 1883, the two Houses met jointly, the vote for Secretary of State at the preceding October election was canvassed, and the result was declared

to be:

James W. Newman, 316,87+; Charles Townsend, 297,757; Ferdinand Schumaker, 12,202; George L. Hafer, 5,345.
