3. GRAND CHAPTER OF CALIFORNIA. The M. E. Grand Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons of the State of California, was organized on the 8th day of May, 1854, there being present, by their legal representatives, three constituted Chapters, viz; San Francisco Chapter, No. 1; Sonora Chapter, No. 2; and Sacramento Chapter, No. 3, all holding under the General Grand Royal Arch Chapter of the United States of America. There are now twenty-two chartered Chapters under its jurisdiction, besides one under dispensation, having an aggregate membership of about seven hundred. The officers of the Grand Chapter for the present year

4. GRAND COMMANDERY OF CALIFORNIA. The Grand Commandery of Knights Templar and the appendant orders for the State of California, was organized, by anthority of a warrant from the Grand Master of the Order in the United States, on the 10th day of August, 1858; the following Commanderies being represented, comprising all now existing in the State, viz:

Present Grand Officers: J. L. Vanbokkelen, M. W. G. M., San Francisco; L. L. Alexander, R. W. D. G. M., Sonora; William M. Allen, R. W. G. W., Shasta; T. Rodgers Johnson, R. W. G. S., San Francisco; Geo. I. N. Monell, R. W. G. T. Philo White, of San Francisco, and John A. Brewster, of Sacramento, R. W. Grand Representatives elect to the R. W. Grand Lodge of the United States.

The R. W. Grand Lodge has under its jurisdiction seventy-five working lodges, with an aggregate of three thousand seven hundred members. Amount of revenue of subordinate lodges for year ending January 1st, 1858, $93,700 ; investments of subordinate lodges for the year ending January 1st, 1858, $57,000; charitable donations, $23,000.

2. RIGHT WORTHY GRAND ENCAMPMENT, I. O. OF O. F. Organized in Sacramento, January 8th, 1855, when the following officers were elected for the fiscal year ending May 7th, 1855; S. H. Parker, M. W. G. P.; Prescott Robinson, M. E. G. H. P.; E. W. Colt, R. W. G. S. W.; T. Rodgers Johnson, R. W. G. Scribe; W. H. Watson, R. W. G. T.; George Borradaile, R. W. G. J. W. Encampment met at Stockton, June 7th, 1855, and with the exception of electing D. Norcross, R. W. G. J. W., and J. W. Dwinelle, R. W. G. Rep., the officers of the previous year were re-elected to serve until May 13th., 1856.

Present Grand Officers: A. S. Iredale, of San Francisco, M. W. Grand Patriarch ; M. K. Shearer, of El Dorado, M. E. Grand High Priest; A. J. Lucas, of Marysville, R. W. Grand Sen. Warden; T. Rodgers Johnson, of San Francisco, R. W. Grand Scribe ; George M. Garwood, of San Francisco, R. W. Grand Treasurer; W. N. Hall, of Todd's Valley, R. W. Grand Jun. Warden.

The encampment branch now consists of fourteen subordinate encampments, and numbers three hundred and sixty-three members.

* The Order of Odd Fellows was established by the Roman soldiers in camp, after the Order of Israelites, during the reign of Nero, the Roman Emperor, which commenced in the year 55, when they were called “Fellow Citizens." The name of Odd Fellows was given by Titus Cæsar, Em. peror of Rome in the year 79, from the singularity of their motions and their krowing each other by night as well as by day, and for their fidelity to him and the country.-History of the Order.
