PREFATORY NOTE.

NEVADA AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION, RENO, NEVADA. TO THE DIRECTOR: I hand you herewith a report on Irrigation Laws and Litigation in Nevada, prepared by Professor Henry Thurtell, formerly State Engineer of this State. This report is presented as a part of Co-operative Irrigation Investigations authorized by act of the State Legislature, in which the U. S. Department of Agriculture and the State of Nevada are the co-operating parties. This particular work was undertaken under the direction of Elwood Mead, then Chief of Irrigation Investigations, as a part of a somewhat comprehensive report on Irrigation in Nevada. Under the terms of the agreement under which this work was done the report is available for publication by the Department of Agriculture and by the Nevada Experiment Station. I submit this report to you as a bulletin of the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station.

Acknowledgements are due for the very great assistance received from the Bulletins of J. D. Stannard and L. II. Taylor, published by the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station, and from the unpublished data compiled by A. E. Chandler for Irrigation Investigations. Many of the notes reviewing water litigation in this State were taken from the reports of Mr. Chandler's and Mr. Stannard's investigations, and the writer of this has not himself examined the county records where the records already compiled by these men were available. Whenever convenient so to do the exact language of Mr. Stannard, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Chandler has been adhered to in this report and without specifying in each case that such is the fact.
