HOW TO BEGIN PRACTICE.

What attitude shall I assume, or what connections shall I make to assure me of success in this locality? These two questions often enter the mind of the lawyer opening a law office for the first time, or in a new field. The best answer to these two questions is the sum and substance of what the celebrated Judge Donovan told law students some time since: Begin law in any state or city with a sense of eternal rectitude: advise every client as you would your own brother.

Consider how completely you hold your client's interest in your hands, and how much depends on your honest judgment. Use wise discretion-be in dead

earnest about it

The law is not a mere scramble for bread money, for we are charged with the safety of property and the progress of society. Live for some object.

Life is a little journey, where we all hurry and many are injured and impatient, while we are called to set them right under trying conditions. Do so bravely.

The world will measure us by the way we do our duty, as it measures the reaper, the racer, the railway and the telephone. We must do something useful, real, and of benefit, that shall better our race, and by it we shall be known to have lived once and to have made the world better by it.
