Fact against Fame is a conteft in which the former ought ever to be victorious; and if Loyola has heard any ungrateful murmur that Lord Nelfen does not merit the glorious title we gave him in our last (Art. 40.) of a Chriftian Hero, let him know that we have proof pofitive on the other fide. Loyola, writes fpeciously, and in the terms of friendship; but from the purport of his Letter, we fear he must have more of the modern Jefuit, than of the founder of the order, in his compofition, We shall probably ever have it to regret, that neither our care or activity, which we can affure our Correspondents are unremitting, can enable us to notice every publication, according to the order which its merits or importance might point out. This is the true and only reason why we have not yet reviewed the publication mentioned to us by "A friend, indeed, to the established Church." We are lefs anxious to fatisfy a Correfpondent, who thinks it unaccountable that, as "directors of the public tafte, and purveyors to the rifing generation," we have not yet mentioned a Spelling Book which has gone through four Editions. All poffible attention fhall be paid to the request of A. B. C. but it is made at an unfavourable time, fince nothing is more difficult than to execute letter-prefs perfectly in a fevere froft. We are very forry that it does not fall in with our plan to anfwer the queries of Con-Fu-Tfee, but we will put them into hands hands of friends, from whom they will, probably, receive a fatisfactory folution. There is very little doubt that the Wildgoofe Chafe was written by Fletcher alone; and the conjecture of H. I. T. that the Perfon of Honour who retrieved it, was Colonel Richard Lovelace, has great probability on it fide. The fame Correfpondent who fuggefts this, informs us that the plot of the Myfterious Mother is related almost Verbatim in the ninth volume of the Spectator, No. 54. a book now fcarce, and almost forgotten. [12mo. 1715.] The Cafuift confulted, was Mr. Perkins, in James the Firit's reign. We would willingly give all poffible affiftance to D. M. of Montrofe, who fo modeftly requests it on an important fubject; but he little knows how many objects imperiously demand our attention. Too many, to have allowed us yet to undertake reading a clofely written Letter of 18 pages. LITERARY INTELLIGENCE. Capt. Scott, the tranflator of Ferishta's Hiftory of the Deccan, has now in the prefs his Perfian Tale. of Inatulla, literally tranflated from the work called Behar Danefb.-He purposes alfo to give, in a fhort time, a faithful and accurate verfion of the Arabian Nights, from the original Arabic MS. in fix volumes, which he has lately purchased ;-a work very earnestly to be defired. Major Oufeley's Oriental Collections (the third and fourth numbers, for 1797) are now in the prefs; and the volume complete, for the year 1798, will be published in the course of a few months. The celebrated Fenifch is preparing at Vienna a German tranflation of the Hiftory of Perfia, by Mirkhoud, to consist of feveral quarto volumes. At Gottingen, a German translation of Major Oufeley's Perfian Mifcellanies has alfo been undertaken. Mr. Pye, whofe Mufe feems neither chilled by time, nor jealous of his alliance with Themis, is employed in writing an Heroic Poem on the subject of Alfred. We hear he will have an antagonist in the auther of Malvern Hills. 'Ayalù d'épis üde βροτοΐσιο About Lady-day will be published (at Meffrs. Rivingtons) the first volume of a new Biographical Work, containing Memoirs of eminent perfons deceafed within the year 1798. To be continued annually.
