Much of this is effected by the frequent attendance of the lady of the village, Mrs. Hosier Williams.

Hinstock, where the exertions of a zealous master are seconded by the daily attendance and assistance of the parochial clergy

man.

Little Rissington, which still preserves its character as one of the most efficient of the small agricultural schools in my district.

The children are under a mistress, seconded by the constant attendance and assistance of the Rector and his family. The religious tone of this school is admirable.

At Oddington the children are under master and mistress, who conduct the school in a very satisfactory manner.

St. John's, Cheltenham, which is one of the best schools I visit. The boys and girls are in separate rooms under master and mistress. Some higher branches under the present efficient master might be introduced with advantage.

The discipline is good, and the religious instruction, which is given principally by the incumbent, admirable.

Stoke Orchard.-A small agricultural parish, where the boys and girls are classified together under an efficient master. In this school there are several children of farmers.

At St. James's, Gloucester, with some defects there are many points worthy of commendation. The information and general intelligence of the boys much improved since last visit.

Tewkesbury Trinity-Infants.-This is a very excellent infantschool. The master efficient, skilful, and gentle; the children intelligent, well informed, and cheerful; the discipline good; the religious tone very satisfactory.

At the National schools here there is much to be pleased with in the senior classes.

At Prestbury the children are in separate rooms under master and mistress. Both schools are much improved during the past year.

Frampton-on-Severn.-This school is in a satisfactory state. The religious instruction very good.

Cainscross.-Much improved during the past year. The senior children better instructed and more intelligent than juniors.

Avening. Comparatively speaking, efficient-far above the usual run of parochial schools; but it does not make that progress which I had expected. The instruction and intelligence of the junior children is not as satisfactory as of the

seniors.

The instruction of the first class is very good.

Geography, Grammar, History of England, Etymology, and Vocal Music are among the branches of instruction in which the children are exercised.

Clevedon.-The boys' school in a more satisfactory state than that of the girls. The boys receive instruction in geography, etymology, and mental arithmetic.

South Cerney-Of the particular attainments of the children in this school I am unable to speak, as I was present merely at the annual examination, and assisted the Rector therein; but of the general results I am able to speak with much satisfaction.

The religious instruction is admirable. The cheerful The cheerful appearance of the children, their quiet and gentle deportment, reflect great credit upon the managers of this school. The tone altogether is very good.

To the curate of the parish, Mr. Mangin, is to be attributed much of the above satisfactory results.

It appeared to me that some more secular instruction might be introduced with advantage.

Miserden-a very small agricultural school-is much improved during the past year.

Bicester.-Girls' school much improved.

Walcot. The senior boys are, comparatively speaking, well instructed; but the juniors are mainly consigned to the care of inefficient monitors.

The master is very laborious and painstaking; but requires further aid to carry out his plans.

In the girls' school the religious instruction is good.

Cam.-The same remarks may be applied to this school as to that at Walcot.

The senior classes are well instructed.

The master anxious to effect improvements, but unable to carry them out.

Hanham. The school here cannot properly be called effective; but considerably improved during past year.

The same may be said of Alveston. Also of Oldlands, in the parish of Bitton. At this last place the master appears to be efficient, and, if properly assisted, would, I believe, effect considerable improvements.

At North Petherton the school is progressing favourably. The senior classes better instructed than the juniors. Here, as in many other instances, children are admitted who should be in an infant-school. They greatly impede the machinery of a National school, and retard the progress of the older

ones.

The religious instruction is very good.

The entrance to this school is through the churchyard, by an unenclosed path. In consequence of this the children play on the graves, and in some cases have broken the grave-stones. A new entrance might be effected at a small expense, or the present pathway might be railed in.

The offices are contiguous to the school, and very offensive: they should be removed to a greater distance; and a playground should be added.

At Withecomb Rawleigh the school is progressing favourably. The junior department is not well instructed. The introduction of secular books would be a great improvement. The religious instruction in both rooms, especially in that of the girls, is extremely good.

Upottery. Here a very great improvement has taken place during the past year. A new mistress has been appointed, who appears to be zealous in her work; and a select list of secular books have been introduced.

The Vicar gives the religious instruction, and is in constant daily attendance at the school.

Bovey Tracey.-This school is improved during past year. The general tone highly satisfactory.

Modbury.The religious instruction here is very good. The general intelligence satisfactory. The introduction of secular books is wanted.

At Launceston the boys' school is much improved since my last visit.

St. Ive.-Under a new master, considerable improvement has been effected here. The Rector and Curate attend daily for the purpose of affording religious instruction. Secular books have been introduced.

St. Budeaux.-There is much to be pleased with in the state of this school, along with sundry defects.

The introduction of secular books and maps would be an improvement.

Dittisham. This is an excellent parochial school. The religious instruction given by the Curate daily very good.

Lerryn, in St. Veep.-Lately established, promises to be a very efficient village school. The satisfactory state here is to be attributed in a great measure to the constant attendance of the Curate.

Northam.-In a satisfactory state. The master and mistress efficient and zealous in their work. The general tone of this

school very good.

Bishop's Tawton is in a satisfactory state. The introduction of secular books would be an improvement.

Lynton. This school maintains its character. Children of both sexes under mistress. The infants instructed apart under a second mistress. The whole tone is admirable, the instruction good, the general intelligence of the children satisfactory, the mistress efficient and zealous. The clergyman takes great interest in the school, and attends regularly.

At Evercreech, with some imperfections, the general tone and

religious instruction are very good, in a great measure produced by the daily attendance of the Vicar.

The girls' school is in a more satisfactory state than that of the boys.

Portishead. Where the children receive superior instruction to that given generally in parochial schools. The information and general intelligence of the children are highly satisfactory. These results are mainly to be attributed to the constant attendance and exertions of the Rector.

Bedminster.-Where as much is done as can well be effected on the old monitorial system. The discipline is very good. The religious instruction is given by the clergy. The knowledge of the children in this, and their general deportment, admirable.

Halstock. There has been considerable improvement in this school during the past year. Geography, grammar, and History of England have been introduced.

Whitchurch Canonicorum.-Much improved, especially in the senior classes.

Marshwood is as effective as it was. The introduction of secular books would be an improvement.

Failand. The religious instruction good, and the general tone of the school satisfactory.

At Almondsbury considerable improvements have been effected during the past year. Secular reading-books have been introduced. The religious information of the children is extremely good; the discipline and general tone of the school. highly satisfactory. The religious instruction is given principally by the clergyman.
