HE Twelfth Cake," a juvenile Amufement; confifting of little Ballads, with a Finate and Introduction. The Mufic with an Accompaniment for the Piano-Forte, compofed by Reginald Spofforth. Price 3s. 6d. Longman and Broderip: "The Twelfth Cake" is formed on plan entirely novel. The fongs are per fectly appropriate to the occasion, which furnishes the title of the work, and are written in the feveral characters of king, queen, a failor's wife, a match-giri, Simoni Pure, a ballad-finger, and harlequin. Thefe characters, generally fpeaking, are fupported with judgment, and at the fame time, prefent to us familiar but plealing airs. The introduction confifts of two

movements, is purely inftrumental, and
may be confidered as a fhort overture.
The firale is a chorus, and concludes the
production with a fpirited and plea fur-
able effect.

The Prefident's March, arranged for two Per-
formers on one Piana-Forte, by R. Taylor.
Price 18.
Prefton and Son..

The Prefident's March is an American compofition, The ftyle in which it is conceived is lively, but wants confequence and ftrength of effect. In the form, in which Mr. Taylor here prefents it to the English public, it furnithes a good exercise for young performers, and poffeffes, in a confiderable degres, the quali fication common to piano-fore duets; which is that of improving the young practitioner in his time.

Skillern. • We have perufed thefe duets with con fiderable pleasure. Much elegance of tyle prevails through the work, and fome of the airs do high credit to fignor Bi anchi's talents, both on account of their accurate and forcible expreffion, as well as their theoretical excellence: "Sol può dir che fia tormento," is moft happily ftudied in the above points, and "Trova on fot, mia bella Clori," poffeffes much original sweetness. "Se ti balta ch'io fammiri," is patticularly refined; the paffages beginning at Sei vezzofa," and Ending at "ela belta," are intimately connected with the fentiment of the poet, and return to the original fubjc& with great Felicity af efe&. Confidering the tender age of thofe for whole benefit this work is chiefly defigned, and that a familiarity and plainnefs, bordering on puerility, was an abfolure requifite of the plan, both Mr. Carey and Mr. Attwood have acquitted themfelves with much addrefs. But, to coa. fine our obfervations to the mufic; the fe veral airs and recitatives, of which the genealogy confiits, are fo pleafingly conceived, and fo judiciously arranged and contracted, as to maintain and intereft the attention to the end. Wherever the compofer has found the fubject of the words fufficiently prominent and diftinguifhed to demand a particular caft of cumftance, and generally with great fucexpreffion, he has attended to that cir

This air, originally trivial in itfelf, affumes, in its prefent ftate, fomewhat of refpectability. The variations were given to it by Mr. Bryan, are calculated to at tract the attention of Piano-Forte prac tioners. They are eafy, progreffive, faithful to the theme, and every way fuit ed to the improving finger of the juvenile musician.

Worm Fever

[ocr errors]

The prefent feafon being uncommonly mild, the number of catarrhal and pneu2 monic diseases.has been comparatively fmall. Many perfons, who are usually afflicted with thefe complaints at this time of the year, have either entirely efcaped, 2 or have been very lightly affected by them. The froft, however, though it lafted but for a few days, rather increafed the number, and aggravated the fymptoms of thefe difcafes. In one cafe of catarrhal fever, befides a confiderable degree of pain in the head, particularly about the frontal finus, forenels and excoriation of the fauces, and fome rigidity in the mufcies of the lower jaw, the cough and difficulty of breathing were fo urgent, as to require the application of leeches and a blifter to the fternum, thefe means, accompanied with gentle purging, and the ufe of antimonials and fquills, fucceeded in the removal of the disease.

It having been announced to the public, in the laft Magazine, that the late reporter of the Monthly State of Diftafes in London ha folpeated his periodical communications, and that a Gmilar corresponden é habeen established with a Gentleman in a different part of the town; it may be proper to obferve, that the limits of the Difpenfary which he attends inclade the whole of the City, and extend like wife confiderably to the North and to the Eaft-It may not be improper farther to remark, that his fituation affords a favourable opportunity of giving fome report refpecting the tate of Puerperal and Infantile Difeafes.
