ENTERED according to Act of Congress, in the year 1840,

BY DAVID FELT & CO.

in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the Southern District of New-York.

PREFACE.

THE present volume of the New-York Annual Register, is the ninth in the series; the publication of the work having been commenced in 1830, and con. tinued regularly for eight years, namely to 1837, when, owing to the embarrassments of the times, affecting business men, its principal supporters, the sales of the volume were inadequate to defray the expenses. This and other causes have reluctantly induced the compiler to suspend the publication for the last two years.

The demand for the work with a large portion of the public who have felt the want of it during the interim has led to the hope that a moderate edition might be disposed of the present year, notwithstanding the gloomy aspect of business generally. The Compiler therefore attempts the revival of the Register at this time, submitting the question to the public whether their patronage shall enable him to continue the publication. The number of copies now printed is less than two-thirds of some of the editions of former years; consequently the price of the volume is advanced sufficiently to meet the case. This will not be considered unreasonable by those who sincerely desire the continuance of a work admitted to be indispensable to all who would be well informed respecting the statistics of the State of New-York. Various causes have operated to delay the appearance of this volume to an unusually late period of the year, among which may be mentioned the neglect of correspondents in various parts of the state to furnish information. Should the public patronage be such as to cause the Register to be continued, arrangements will be made to insure its publication in future at as early a period of the year as may be practicable, consistent with its utility.

To those patrons who have been uniform in their support of the Register, as well as those with whom we now form an acquaintance through its pages, we return our grateful acknowledgements. The same are also due to those who
