HE Editor of this and its companion volume* has long desired to gather into some such

compilation many of those verses which have appeared to his own apprehension luminous, incisive, or comfortable pieces, and which by their melody or suggestion seem to possess a power to instruct or charm. From a very large accumulation these have been selected, as either expressing the grief of life beneath its tribulation-and such an expression is itself often a lenitive for sorrow-or the pensive gladness of life beneath the influence of those hopes which are as an anchor to the soul.
