A BOOK OUR BEST FRIEND. WHEN a man is worn out with the work of the day, he can nowhere find so much pleasure as in reading. The child goes to school and learns to read that he may in after life know, by the help of books, how the world was made, and how it is kept going; how men who have gone before him have lived, and how those about him live; how things are made, and how to supply his wants; how best to labour in the kind of work which falls to his lot ;how to become a good man, and to do his duty in that state of life in which it has pleased God to call him. And still, when each new turn of duty is done, his chief source of joy and comfort will be in getting to know more, and more, and more, and more! A book is ever our best friend. |
