PREFACE.

IN presenting the following pages to the public, the writer and compiler is not able to say, as many authors are, that she has been urged to do so by the solicitations of friends.

With the exception of some members of her own family, on whose discernment, judgment, and piety, she could rely, no persons are acquainted with their contents.

She might, perhaps, have sought and obtained the recommendation of some ministerial friends, well known to the public, but two distinct feelings prevented her from soliciting such a favour:-The first was, a desire that no respected name should be involved in the defects of the work; and the other, was a secret fear that some might check her in her progress, by intimating that she "exercised" herself "in great matters," and "in things too high" for her.

Her reasons for studying the subject are given in the introductory Letter - and knowing, from intercourse with many friends, that considerable feeling is entertained against the writings of Mr. Combe and the science of Phrenology, as well, also, from having been the subject of such feeling in her own mind; her intention was, from the first, to supply, according to her ability, that which, while it
