DISCOURSE XIV.

THE FULNESS OF CHRIST THE SOURCE OF THE BELIEVER'S SUPPLY.

JOHN i. 16.

Of his fulness have all we received, and grace for

grace.

Two things, which are of the last importance to man

in his lapsed condition, demand his serious attention, though there is scarcely any thing about which he is less concerned. These are, the knowledge of himself and of Christ. "Know thyself" was one of the wisest maxims of the heathens; and though they did not enjoy means sufficient for acquiring it, yet they seem to have admitted the necessity and propriety of it. Such as enjoy divine revelation, have the means, yet are not careful to employ them. As sin has placed them in circumstances truly hazardous, and deprived them of all ability to secure themselves; it has also blinded their minds, and it continually deceives them. "They know not that they are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked." In this state, they cannot be impressed with their danger, nor cordially embrace any means that may offer for their deliverance. Messiah, and he alone, is the Deliverer from evil, but without some just conceptions of him, in this character, no sinner can receive him as his Saviour. Sinners ought to VOL. II.
