Schedule, and fhall fign the fame with their Names and respective
Additions, as fuch Overfeers or fubftantial Householders as afore-
faid; and the better to enable the faid Overseers or fubftantial
Householders as aforefaid, to make fuch Answers and Returns,
they, and the Perfons fo affifting them as aforefaid, are hereby
authorized and empowered to ask all fuch Queftions of the Perfons
within the faid Parish, Township or Place refpecting themselves and
the Number and Quality of the Perfons conftituting their respective
Families, as fhall be neceffary for ftating the Particulars required to
be ftated concerning them, in the faid Anfwers and Returns; and Penalty.
every fuch Perfon refusing to anfwer, or wilfully giving a false

IV. And be it further enacted, That every Rector, Vicar, Curate Officiating Mi or other Officiating Minifter of every Parish, Township or Place nifters to tranf(Extra-parochial or otherwife) in England, including Free Chapels, mit Answers to Donatives and Peculiars, to whom fuch Schedule fhall have been Queftions relative to Baptifms, delivered as aforefaid, fhall forthwith prepare an Anfwer or Return to the Questions relative to Baptifms, Burials and Marriages in the faid Schedule fet forth, and fhall, on or before the Twentieth Day of June One thoufand eight hundred and eleven, duly tranfmit fuch Aufwer or Return to the Bishop, within the Limits of whofe Diocef: the faid Parish, Township or Place is fituate; and the Tranfmitted to feveral Bishops thall, on or before the Tenth Day of July One Archbishop. thoufand eight hundred and eleven, tranfmit the fame to the Arch- 1.aid before bifhops of their refpective Provinces, and thereupon the faid Arch- Privy Council. bishops fhall, on or before the First Day of Auguft One thoufand before Parlia eight hundred and eleven, caufe the fame to be laid before His ment. V. And be it further enacted, That the Justices of the Peace, or Juftices to ap any Two or more of them, within their refpective Jurifdictions in point a Time England, fhall, at or fo foon as conveniently may be after the faid and Place for Eafter Quarter-Seffions in the Year One thoufand eight hundred and attend with eleven, appoint a Time and Place, or Times and Places, (which Time Returns and fhall be not fooner than the Twenty fourth Day of June, nor later Antwers, than the Twentieth Day of July, in the Year One thoufand eight hundred and eleven, and may be at the Midfummer Quarter-Seffion if they fhall think fit), for the Overfeers of the Poor of the feveral Parifies, Townships and Places, within their refpective Divifions or Limits, or for fuch fubftantial Householders as aforefaid, as the cafe may be, to attend them for the Purpose of this Act, with Returns and Anfwers to the faid Six firft Questions ftated in the Schedule to this Act annexed, and caufe Notice of fuch Time and Place to Notice. be given to fuch Overfeers and Householders refpectively, according to the Form in the Schedule to this Act, and alfo to the High Conftables, or where there are no High Conftables, to fuch other proper Officers as aforefaid; and thereupon the faid Overfeers or Overfeers, &c. Jubitantial Householders as aforefaid, or fome One of them, in and to deliver Re51 Gro. III. for turns upon Oath.

Power to

for every fuch Parish, Township or Place, fhall and they are hereby required to attend the Justices of the Peace at fuch Meeting or Meetings refpectively, and then and there deliver to the faid Jultices in Writing, figued by himfelf or themfelves, a juft and true Aufwer and Return to the faid Questions upon Oath, (or being of the People called Qualers, on Affirmation), as hereinafter directed; and the faid High Conftables, or other proper Officers fo defcribed as aforefaid, fhall, and they are hereby required to attend the faid refpective Meetings for the Purpofes hereinafter directed.

VI. And be it further enacted, That the faid Juftices of the Peace fhall and they are hereby required to receive and take, at fuch Meetings fo to be appointed by them as aforefaid, the Answers and Returns to be made purfuant to the Directions aforefaid, and then and there to adminifler to the faid Overfeers or fubftantial Houfeholders refpectively, the Oath or Affirmation contained in the faid Schedule; and, if they fee Caufe, to examine fuch Overfeers and Houfeholders upon Oath or Affirmation, touching any of the Matters contained in fuch Questions and Anfwers, and, if neceffary, to adjourn Meetings; to deliver to adjourn the faid Meetings to any Time or Times, not later than Answers, &c. to the faid Twentieth Day of July, and to any Place or Places, in High Constables, order that the faid Returns may be rendered more complete or indorfe Returns, fatisfactory; and fhall then deliver fuch Answers and Returns to and tranfmit to the respective High Conftables or other proper Officers as aforefaid,

who fhall thereupon indorfe on each of fuch Returns the Name of the County, and alfo of the Riding, Divifion, Rape, Wapentake, Lathe, Precinct, Soke, Franchife, Liberty, City, Borough, Town or County Corporate, wherein the Parish, Township or Place therein mentioned, is fituate, and fhall deliver or tranfmit fuch Returns, together with a true and perfect Lift of every Parish, Township and Place, and alfo of the Overfeers and Householders aforefaid, to whom fuch Schedule fhall have been delivered as aforefaid, to the feveral Clerks of the Peace and Town Clerks for the Jurifdiction in which the faid Juftices are authorized to act, at their respective Offices, on or before the Twenty feventh Day of July One thoufand eight hundred and elèven.

VII. And be it further enacted, That within that Part of Great Britain called Scotland, the Sheriff Deputes and Stewart Deputes, or their Subftitutes, in their refpective Counties and Stewartries, and the Provoit of the Royal Burghs of Edinburgh and Glafgow within the faid Burghs, fhall nominate and appoint, in Writing under the Hand of their refpective Clerks, the Schoolmafter, or other fit Perfon or Perfons, in each Parish or Place, to take account of the feveral Sheriffs' Officers, Matters required by this Act; and the Sheriffs' Officers, Stewarts' Officers and Town Officers refpectively, are required forthwith to deliver the faid Schedule to the Schoolmatter, Perfon or Perfons fo appointed; and on the faid Twenty feventh Day of May One thoufand eight hundred and eleven, the Schoolmafter, Perfon or Perfons fo appointed, fhall proceed to take Account of the Number of Perfons at that time within the Limits of their respective Parishes and Places, and inform themfelves of the feveral Particulars relating to all the Matters fpecified in the faid Schedule, by proceeding from Houfe to Houfe, or otherwife as they fhall judge expedient, for the better Execution of this A&t, and from fuch Information as aforefaid, fhall prepare an Answer or Return to all the faid Queftions,

according to the Form prefcribed in the faid Schedule, and fhall then exhibit the fame to the Minifter of the Parish for his Cor. rection and Approbation, and for any Obfervations which he may think fit to write thereupon; and the feveral Schoolmasters and other Perfons appointed hall thereafter fign the fame with their Names and ordinary Defignations; and the better to enable them to make fuch Anfwers or Returns as aforefaid, they are hereby authorized and empowered to afk all fuch Queftions of the Perfons within their refpective Parishes, refpecting themselves and the Number and Quality of the Perfous conftituting their refpective Families, as fhall be neceffary for ftating the Particulars required to be stated concerning them in the faid Anfwers and Returns; and every fuch Perfon refufing to anfwer, or wilfully giving a falfe Anfwer to fuch Questions, or any of them, fhall, for every fuch Refufal or falfe Answer, forfeit a Sum not exceeding Five Pounds, nor lefs than Forty Shillings, at the Diferetion of any Juftice of the Peace before whom the Complaint thereof fhall be made.

VIII. And be it further enacted, That the Sheriff Deputes and Stewart Deputes, or their Subftitutes, for Scotland, and the Provofts of the Royal Burghs of Edinburgh and Glasgow, within their refpective Jurifdictions, fhall appoint a Time or Times, which fhall not be fooner than the First Day of June, nor later than the laft Day of June, in the Year One thoufand eight hundred and eleven, for the Schoolmaster, Perfon or Perfons appointed by them as aforefaid, to attend at their Offices, or at fuch other Places as they fhall appoint, with the Returns and Answers to all the Questions ftated in the Schedule to this Act; and the faid Sheriff Deputes, Stewart Sheriff, &c. to Deputes or their Substitutes, and Provofts, fhall caufe Notice to be receive fame given to them refpectively for that Purpofe accordingly; and fhall upon Oath; to examine upon then and there receive the Anfwers and Returns to be made as Oath, and caufe aforefaid, and adminifter the Oath contained in the faid Schedule Return to be to the Schoolmafter, Perfon or Perfons appointed to make fuch indorsed; may Returns as aforefaid; and fuch Sheriff Deputes, Stewart Deputes direct Returns or their Subftitutes, and Provosts aforefaid, if they see Caufe, may be verified upon examine the faid Schoolmafter, Perfon or Perfons upon Oath, Oath before touching any of the Matters contained in fuch Questions and Justice of the Anfwers, and fhall thereafter direct their refpective Clerks to indorfe Peace. the fame with the Name of the County or Stewartry, or District thereof, wherein the Parish or Place therein mentioned is fituated; or otherwife, in Cafes where the faid Sheriff Deputes, Stewart Deputes or their Subftitutes fhall think proper, they fhall direct the Schoolmasters and other Perlons aforefaid, to verify the faid Returns and Answers upon Oath, before any Juftice of the Peace within the County or Stewartry, and thereafter to tranfmit the Schedule, previous to the faid laft Day of June, in any convenient manner to the faid Sheriff Deputes, Stewart Deputes, or their Subftitutes, who fhall direct the fame to be indorfed as aforefaid.

IX. And be it further enacted, That the feveral Accounts fo taken Accounts taken in Writing by the Overfeers and Schoolmafters, or other Perfons fo throughout appointed as aforefaid, in every Parish, Township or Place within G. B. for preGreat Britain, for the Purpofe of preparing the aforefaid Anfwers Paring Aniwers, and Returns, fhall be fafely kept and preferved by the Church- Churchwardens, wardens or Chapelwardens in England, and by the Schoolmatters or &c.; and deother Perfons appointed as aforefaid in Scotland, for the time being, livered over to

of the feveral Parishes, Townships or Places to which the fame relate, and fhall be delivered over by them to their Succeffors in Office refpectively; and that the faid Clerks of the Peace and Town Clerks throughout that Part of Great Britain called England, and the tary of State Sheriff Deputes, Stewart Deputes or their Subftitutes, and Provolts Attract laid be- in Scotland, fhall on or before the First Day of August One thoufore Parliament. fand eight hundred and eleven, tranfmit, with all convenient Speed, fuch Answers and Returns as they fhall have received in manner aforefaid (together with a Lift of the Parishes, Townships and Places within their refpective Counties, Stewartries, Ridings or Divifions, from whence no Returns have been made to them) to the Office of His Majefty's Principal Secretary of State for the Home Department; and that the fame fhall be digefted and reduced into Order by fuch Officer as fuch Secretary of State fhall appoint for the Purpofe; and that an Abstract thereof fhall be laid before both Houfes of Parliament, within Three Months after the faid First Day of Auguft, or if Parliament fhall not then be fitting, within the First Fourteen Days of the Seffion next enfuing.

In Scotland from
Land Tax

X. And be it further enacted, That there fhall be paid and allowed for the Trouble and Expences of the feveral Perfons employed in the Tranfactions aforefaid, for every Return which shall be fo made and tranfmitt d to the Clerks of the Peace and Town Clerks refpectively, purfuant to the Directions aforefaid, the Sums following; videlicet, To the Clerk of the Peace or Town Clerk, for the Return which fhall be made from every fuch Parish, Townfhip or Place in England, the Sum of One Shilling; to the High Constable or other proper Officer in England, for the like, the Sum of One Shilling and Six Pence; to the Clerks of the Juftices of the Peace throughout England, for the like, the Sum of One Shilling; and that the Juftices of the Peace in England, at their respective Midfummer Quarter-Seffions, or at the Michaelmas Quarter-Seffions following, in the Year One thoufand eight hundred and eleven, fhall and they are hereby required to make an Order upon their refpective Treasurers, to pay the fame out of the Rates to be made and collected for the refpective Counties, Ridings, Divifions, Precincts, Sokes, Franchifes, Liberties, Cities and Counties Corporate, or fhall cause the fame to be paid out of the Poor Rates of and for fuch Counties Corporate, or Places as have no County Rates; and alfo, that the faid Juftices in England, at their faid Midfummer QuarterSeffions or at the Michaelmas Quarter-Seffions following, may and they are hereby required to allow to the feveral Overfeers, Householders, Parish Clerks or Veftry Clerks, in England, a reafonable Compenfation for the Trouble neceffarily taken, and alfo for the Expences (if any) by them neceffarily incurred in the Execution of this Act, and fhall order Payment thereof to be made out of the Poors Rate of the feveral Parishes, Townships or Places refpectively, and fhall thereafter allow the fame in the Annual Accounts of the feveral Overfeers of the Poor.

XI. And be it further enacted, That the Sheriff Deputes, Stewart Deputes or their Subftitutes, and Provofts of the Royal Burghs of Edinburgh and Glafgow in Scotland, may and they are hereby required to allow to the Sheriff Clerks or Town Clerks refpectively, for the Return which fhall be made and tranfmitted from every Parish or Place in Scotland, the Sum of One Shilling; and to the

Sheriffs' Officer or Town Officer, who shall distribute the Schedule to the Schoolmasters and others, for the like, the Sum of Two Shillings and Six Pence; and the faid Sheriff Deputes, Stewart Deputes or their Subftitutes, and Provofts, may and they are hereby required to allow to the Schoolmafters and others a reafonable Compenfation for the Trouble by them neceffarily taken, and also for the Expences (if any) by them neceffarily incurred in the Execution of this Act; and to order Payment thereof, and alfo of the Sums refpectively payable to the Sheriffs' Clerk, Stewarts' Clerk or Town Clerk, and to the Sheriffs' Officer or Town Officer, to be made by the Collector of the Land Tax of and for the Shire, Stewartry or other Place, (as the cafe thall require) out of any Money in his Hands; and fuch Collector fhall and is hereby authorized to pay the fame accordingly.

XII. And be it further enacted, That every fuch Clerk of the Clerks of the Peace, Town Clerk, High Conftable, Conttable, Tythingman, Peace, &c. Headborough or other fuch Officer as aforefaid, and alio every fuch Churchwarden, Chapelwarden, Sidesman, Parish Clerk, Vestry Clerk, Overfeer of the Poor, Householder, Schoolmatter or other Perfon fo appointed as aforefaid, making wilful Default in any of the Matters required of them refpectively by this Act, fhall, for every fuch wilful Default, forfeit a Sum not exceeding Five Pounds, Penalty. nor lefs than Forty Shillings, at the Difcretion of the Juftice or Jultices before whom Complaint there of fhall be made: And in cafe Other Perfons any of the before mentioned Officers and other Perions fhall have fo appointed. made Default, or fhail have omitted to attend with or refpecting the Aufwers and Returns at the appointed Time, the faid Juftices in England, and Sheriff Deputes, Stewart Deputes or their Subftitutes, and Provofts, in Scotland, may, and they are hereby required forthwith to nominate and appoint fome other Perfon or Perfons in their Stead, to execute the Provifions of this Act; and the Perfon or Perfons fo nominated and appointed fhall, inftead of the Officer or Perfon fo making Default, or omitting to attend as aforefaid, be entitled to receive the Fees or Compenfation hereinbefore mentioned; and fhall also be liable to the fame Penalty in cafe of making wilful Default.

XIII. And be it further enacted, That the feveral Forfeitures Recovery and and Penalties inflicted by this Act fhall, if not immediately paid, Application of be levied by Diftrefs and Sale of the Offender's Goods and Chattels, Penalties. by virtue of a Warrant under the Hand and Seal of any Justice of the Peace, having Jurifdiction where fuch Offender thall dwell, rendering to the faid Offender the Overplus (if any) after the Charge of fuch Diftrefs and Sale fhall be deducted; and in cafe fufficient Diftrefs fhall not be found, then it fhall be lawful for fuch Justice to commit fuch Offender to the Common Gaol, there to remain without Bail or Mainprize for a Term not exceeding Three Calendar Months, unlefs the faid Forfeiture and Charges fhall be fooner paid; and the faid Forfeitures, when recovered in England, fhall be paid, One Half to the Informer, and the other Half to the faid refpective Treafurers, to be applied in Aid of the Rates aforefaid; and any Perfon fhall be deemed a competent Witness for the Execution of any of the Purpofes of this Act, notwithftanding his paying or being liable to pay towards fuch Poors Rate or County Rates; and in cafe the faid Forfeitures fhall be recovered in Scotland,
