Area and Population-The land area of the Irish Free State is 17,019,154 acres or 27.349 square miles. The population in 1923 was estimated at 3,165,000. The population of Dublin in 1923 was placed at 431,000. Imports and Exports-Ireland (as a whole) imported in 1924 merchandise valued at $16,039.978 from the United States and ported $29.976.004 worth of goods to the same country.

NORTHERN IRELAND.

Northern Ireland maintains a separate existence from the Irish Free State. It is made up of the counties of Down, Antrim, Londonderry. Armagh, Tyrone and Fermanagh. It is governed by a parliament and a ministry, which in 1924 comprised the following members: Prime Minister-Sir James Craig. Finance-H. M. Pollock.

Area and Population-The area of northern Ireland is 3,351,970 acres or 5,237 square miles. The population in 1922 was estimated at 1,284,000. The population of Belfast, the capital, was estimated at 425.000.

ALBANIA.

Albania before the great war was an autonomous kingdom created at a conference of ambassadors in London May 30, 1913, as a result of the Balkan wars. Its territory formerly comprised the Turkish provinces of Scutari and Yanina. Until the outbreak of the European war in August. 1914, it was governed by a king (mpret) and an international com. mission. William I., prince of Wied, was the first king, but he was on the throne only half a year, an insurrection compelling him to leave the c pital. Durazzo, Sept. 2. 1914. Since then the country has maintained an independent government at Tirana. The area (estimated) of Albania is 14,500 square miles and the population 831,877. The population of Tirana is 12.000. REPUBLIC OF AUSTRIA.

Government-The various states composing the former Austro-Hungarian empire at the conclusion of the war broke away from the union and declared themselves independent of the mother country, each becoming a republic in form. Austria herself was proclaimed a republic Nov. 12, 1918, and the government was administered by a national assembly. On Feb. 16. 1919. a national constitutional assembly was elected and in October, 1920, the elections for the first parliament were held. The assembly on Oct. 22, 1919, formally adopted the name "Republic of Austria" for the state, omitting the word German from the title. The assembly is elected by popular vote and the first chamber, or bundesrat, is chosen by the provincial diets. Dr. Michael Hainisch was elected president Dec. 9. 1920, for a term of four years. The chancellor in 1924 was Dr. Ignace Seipel. Area and Population-The area of Austria is 32,352 square miles and the population, according to the census of March 7, 1923, was 6.526 661. The population of Vienna in 1923 was 1,863,783.

Imports and Exports-The value of the imports in 1922 was approximately $318,452,600 and of the exports $210.964.400. The United States in 1924 exported merchandise to the value of $2.643.174 and imported goods valued at $4.756.308 from Austria.

Czechoslovakia announced her independence Oct. 18. 1918, and on Nov. 15 the same year the Czechoslovak national assembly declared the state to be a republic, with Prof. T. G. Masaryk as its first president. The chief executive formally assumed his duties on Dec. 31, 1918, in Prague, the capital of the new state. The principal countries in the republic are Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and Slovakia. The national parliament, consists of a chamber of deputies elected for a term of six years and containing 300 members, and of a senate of 150 members elected for a term of eightyears. The president's term is seven years. Area and Population-The total area of Czecho. slovakia is 54,264 square miles. The population in 1921 was 13.610.405. By provinces the population in 1921 was: Bohemia, 6.664.932; Moravia, 2.660.737: Silesia, 670,937; Slovakia. 2.993.479: Ruthenia. 605.731. The city of Prague in 1921 had a population of 676.657. Imports and Exports-The total exports in 1923 amounted to $360,000 000 and the imports to $280.000.000. FINLAND.

Finland was proclaimed an independent state July 20, 1917, and a republic on Oct. 7 of the same year. On July 25, 1919, Prof. Kaarlo Juho Stahlberg was elected the first president Universal suffrage of the republic by the diet. Members of par(men and women) prevails. liament, 100 in number, are chosen by direct vote. The prime minister in 1924 wa Prof. Lauri Ingman and the minister of foreign affairs Hjalmar Procope.

The area of Finland is 132,550 square miles and the population in 1921 was 3.402.593. In the fiscal year 1924 Finland exported $8.302.355 worth of merchandise to the United States and imported goods to the value of $10.388,399. The total imports of Finland in 1922 were valued at 3.953,100,000 Finnish marks and the total exports at 4.461,100,000 marks.

Hungary was proclaimed an independent republic Nov. 16. 1918, with Count Michael Karolyi as provisional president and a visional assembly as the source of legislative power. This administration continued until March 22, 1919, when the Karolyi cabinet resigned and was succeeded by a bolshevist cabinet under Bela Kun. Early in August Bela Kun was forced to flee from the country. In March, 1920. Admiral Nicholas von Horthy was elected regent and Hungary was declared a monarchy. Ex-King Charles in 1921 made two attempts to regain the throne. but was unsuccessful, and in November was exiled by the allies to Madeira, where he died. Hungary has an area of 35.790 square miles and in 1921 had a population of 7.945.878. Total imports in 1922 valued at $109 600.000; otal exports, $66,800,000. Turin Palermo Genoa Exports and Imports-The value of merchandise exported in 1923 was $2,211,600,000; imported, $3.444,000,000. The total value of exports to the United States in 1924 was $79.933,956; imports from the United States, $175,312.977. Chief imports are coal, cotton, grain, silk, wool, timber, machinery, sugar and oil: chief exports, silk. wine, oil, coral, sulphur, hemp and flax.

Exports and Imports-Imports in 1921. 4122.097,642 dinars; exports, 2,460.737,562 dinars. In 1922 Jugoslavia and Albania imported merchandise valued at $522.394 from the United States and exported to this country goods valued at $256,840. The exports are mainly agricultural products and animals and the imports cotton and woolen goods and metals.
