Ostrander of Glens Falls, N.Y., in the Chair. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 o'clock in the ball room of the Onondaga Hotel, Syracuse, N.Y. PRESIDENT OSTRANDER: The convention will be in order; I introduce to you Mayor Willis R. Stone, who, on behalf of the City of Syracuse, will extend to us the courtesy of a formal welcome. MAYOR STONE: Lumbermen, Forestmen and others, I am very glad to be here to welcome you myself. Quite often it is impossible for a man who is mayor of a city like Syracuse to attend the many functions which he is invited to attend, and he is very apt to slide out and ask some second man to represent the city in his place, but I am certainly interested in the matter of forestry and to meet you all and to say that Syracuse is very glad to have you with us is indeed a pleasure. I am interested in forestry and in the forests as a play place for us and for our play time. I appreciate what the work of the forestry departments of the state and of the great universities are doing to preserve for us these great play places. I fully appreciate the intense sums of money that have been wasted in the endeavor to save these for future use. We should get after these matters of the forests. Syracuse is very fortunate, we have learned in the last few years a great deal about the forests, we have been fortunate in having in our midst Dean Baker and Syracuse has thru him learned of all of these great questions that affect the forests and as they affect the forest they affect the whole state and all that Syracuse has been able to pay has been valuable not only to the State of New York but to Syracuse in particular. I feel that it was not only proper but very necessary for me to welcome you on behalf of the university. I hope that your deliberance will be of good not only to the whole community but to you as individuals. I thank you. PRESIDENT OSTRANDER: Mayor Stone, the Empire State |
