RESOLVES.

JANUARY SESSION, 1839.

Chapter 1.

Resolve in favor of James Small.

Approved January 19, 1839.

RESOLVED, That there be allowed and paid from the Treasury of State, out of any money not otherwise appropriated, the sum of Twenty Dollars, to James Small, it being for services rendered by him, as Brigade Inspector, during the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty-five.

Chapter 2.

Resolve repealing a Resolve constituting the State Treasurer an Auditor of Accounts against the State.

Approved January 21, 1839.

RESOLVED, That a Resolve approved March 23d, 1938, entitled a "Resolve constituting the State Treasurer an Auditor of Accounts against the State," be and the same is hereby repealed.

Chapter 3.

Resolve authorizing the Land Agent to exchange certain Lands with Massachusetts.

Approved January 21, 1839. RESOLVED, That the Land Agent be, and hereby is authorized and empowered to exchange any township of land belonging to this State, of equal value with the same, for township Number Eleven, in the Fifth Range of Townships belonging to the State of Massachusetts.

Chapter 4.

Resolve in favor of Harvey E. Robinson.

Approved January 22, 1839.

RESOLVED, That there be paid out of the Treasury of the State to Harvey E. Robinson of Harmony the sum of Three Hundred Dollars, on account of a severe injury sustained by him while engaged in the Military service of the State.

Chapter 5.

Resolve in favor of Amos Davis, Assignee of Nathaniel Haskell.

Approved January 22, 1839. RESOLVED, That the time allowed by a Resolve, approved on the twenty-fifth day of February in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-one, in which Nathaniel Haskell was to make his selection of the three hundred acres of land thereby granted to him; and enlarged and extended by a subsequent Resolve approved the thirty-first day of January in the year of our Lord, one thousand, eight hundred and thirty two, be and the same is hereby enlarged and extended to the fifteenth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty.

RESOLVED, That the selection may be made by Amos Davis, Assignee of said Nathaniel Haskell, from any township of land belonging to the State of Maine, which is now surveyed into lots, or which may be surveyed into lots, before said fifteenth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty, and upon said Davis giving notice in writing of his selection to the Land Agent, and exhibiting to him satisfactory evidence of the assignment of the original Resolve, the Land Agent be and hereby is authorized and required to convey by deed, for and in behalf of the State of Maine, to said Davis, his heirs or assigns, the said three hundred acres of land according to said original Resolve.

Chapter 6.

Resolve for procuring Indexes to the Public Documents.

Approved January 22, 1839.

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be directed to procure suitable printed Indexes to be affixed to all the bound documents now in the State House for the use of the Legislature; and also to procure suitable Indexes to all such documents as may hereafter be bound for the use of the Legislature, previous to binding the same.

Chapter 7.

Resolve in favor of the town of Lexington.

Approved January 22, 1839.

RESOLVED, That there be paid out of the Treasury of the State, to the Treasurer of the town of Lexington, the sum of Eighty Four Dollars, on account of an error, and interest thereon, in the sum allowed to the Treasurer of said town in the Roll of Accounts, Number One, for the payment of the Bounty on Wheat, by a Resolve approved the twentieth day of March, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-eight.

Chapter 8.

Resolve providing for repair of Gun House in Turner.

Approved January 22, 1839.

RESOLVED, That there be and hereby is appropriated the sum of Two Hundred Dollars to be expended under the direction of the Governor and Council, for the purpose of repairing a Gun House in the town of Turner.

Chapter 9.

Resolve relating to Trespassers upon the Public Lands.

Approved January 24, 1839.

RESOLVED, That the Land Agent be and is hereby authorized and required to employ forthwith sufficient force to arrest, detain and imprison all persons found trespassing on the territory of this State, as bounded and established by the treaty of 1783-And that the Land Agent be and is hereby empowered to dispose of all the teams, lumber and other materials in the hands and possession of said trespassers in such way and manner as he may deem necessary and expedient at the time, by destroying the same or otherwise; and that the sum of Ten Thousand Dollars be and hereby is appropriated for the purpose of carrying this Resolve into effect; and that the Governor with the advice of Council be and is hereby authorized to draw his warrant from time to time, for such sums, as may be required for the purposes aforesaid.

Chapter 10.

Resolve in favor of the People's Bank of Bangor.

Approved January 25, 1839. WHEREAS The charter of the People's Bank of Bangor has been surrendered, therefore

RESOLVED, That the Treasurer of the State within six months from the passage of this Resolve, pay to the President and Directors of said Bank all moneys due them from the State.

Chapter 11.

Resolve in favor of Amos Doane.

Approved January 25, 1839.

RESOLVED, That Amos Doane of Hampden, shall be entitled to receive two hundred acres of land out of any township that now is or that hereafter may be surveyed and appropriated to the fulfilment of the Resolves hereto-, fore passed in favor of the officers and soldiers of the

Revolutionary War, Provided, that said Doane shall first furnish to the Land Agent satisfactory evidence that he served in the Revolutionary War, three years in the Military and Naval service of the United States and provided further, that said Doane has not already received a grant of land or money from this State or the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on account of said services. And that the Land Agent be and hereby is authorized and instructed to make to said Doane a conveyance of said land when said Doane shall have furnished the evidence required by this Resolve.

Chapter 12.

Resolve making appropriation of Land for Officers and Soldiers of the Revolution, and their Widows.

Approved January 28, 1839.

RESOLVED, That Township letter D in the first range of townships, bordering upon the east line of the State, in the County of Washington, is hereby appropriated to satisfy the holders of certificates for land, issued by the Land Agent, under Resolves approved March 17, 1835, March 20, 1838,-and Resolve additional, approved March 23, 1838, where the holders of certificates have not selected lots, and received deeds, and for satisfying claimants whose claims may hereafter be allowed by virtue of said Resolves, or for any subsequent, special or general Resolve that may be passed, granting land to officers or soldiers of the War of the Revolution or their widows; and it is hereby made the duty of the Land Agent, to cause said township to be surveyed, as soon as may be, into lots of two hundred acres each, to be numbered one and upwards, and place the numbers in a box to be kept for that purpose, and each person who shall be entitled to a lot, under the provisions of the above mentioned Resolves, shall in person, or by agent draw one number therefrom, which shall represent the lot to which each person is entitled.
