THE object of the following pages is to explain, and in explaining to enforce, the doctrine of the plenary inspiration of Holy Scripture. On the general subject I believe an entire concurrence of opinion to exist between myself and the Society under whose auspices the work has been prepared. But for the method of the argument, and the detailed views maintained in the course of it, I am solely responsible. The method adopted will probably appear to some minds to include matters not strictly related to the subject of which I profess to treat. I earnestly crave the indulgence of my readers on this point, and ask for their patient forbearance during the earlier stages of the argument. In support of this plea I am anxious briefly to explain for what reasons this particular line has been selected. It will appear, I believe, that no topic has been introduced devoid of an immediate and important bearing on the specific question of inspiration, and not requisite for the elucidation of some vital principle.
