PREFACE.

To the many friends who have sent kind words of approval of the series of "Readings and Recitations," of which this collection is the Fourth, we return heartfelt thanks.

If they have added to the interest of meetings, or been the means of awakening an interest in, or helped to advance, the cause they are intended to promote, our object has been attained.

It is encouraging to note the progress of the mission in which we labor. The Temperance cause has advanced rapidly and never occupied so auspicious a position as now. The interest in it has increased from year to year, till to-day it is the greatest and most important question before the people, moral, religious, political, or social.

To supply a want felt by the workers, this series of cheap Readings has been prepared. The aim has been in making this present collection to have the selections as varied as possible. The thoughts of our best writers and speakers are given, and while some of the articles may be recognized as old-time favorites, yet others now appear for the first time, having been written especially for this number.
