This roster is designed to expedite research about the chaplaincy and includes the names of Regular Army chaplains who served on active duty during 1865-1920. It does not contain names of chaplains who were mustered out of the Army following the Civil War, but only those of chaplains who remained on or returned to active duty. Neither does it contain names of Volunteers, National Guard, and National Army chaplains. Active duty service for chaplains who served beyond June 1920 is not recorded (i.e., 1913- ). The Historical Office, U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School, Fort Wadsworth, New York 10305, would appreciate notification of any errors or omissions. Resources used to compile this roster were: Francis B. Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army, 1789–1903; Official United States Army Register(s), 1865–1920; Army-Navy Journal, 1865-1920; personnel files at the National Archives, Washington, D.C.; records at the Department of the Army, Office of the Chief of Chaplains, Washington, D.C.; and various denominational publications.
