THREE Sonatas for the Piano-forte, com→ pofed by Muzio Clementi. Price 8s.

Longman and Broderip.

Mr. Clementi is frequently ftriking and forcible in his ideas, but never ftudied the first and great quality in mufic, effect, with more fuccefs than in fome movements of the'prefent publication.

The firft fonata is in C major, and opens with a movement in common time, Allegro di molto; the paffages of which flow out of each other with much eafe and fweetnefs, and exhibit great art in their modulation. The fucceeding movement, an adagio in, is elegant and finished, and the finale beautifully lively. The fecond piece is in G major, and commences with an engaging movement, in common time, Allegro, followed by a movement in the folemn style," in which we cannot fay the author appears with the fuperiority of talent generally difplayed in his compofitions; he feems to have mistaken heavinefs for folemnity, and baldness for fimplicity: the fubject of the concluding rondo, though trivial, is pleasingly handled, and clofes the fonata in a masterly ftyle. The third piece, which is in D major, opens in common time, Allegro, and after a movement recommended by its ftriking and uncommon effects, leads to an Allegretto vivace, in, the theme of which, though it poffeffes the theoretical defect of starting on the fixth of the key, is ingenious, and relieved very judiciously by the introduction of the minor of the original key. The finale is particularly interefting in its fubject, and is purfued with an addrefs which befpeaks the real master, and fixes the attention of the hearer.

"Blue Beard," a favourite Air in the Pantomime of that name, performed at DruryIane Theatre, arranged as a Rondo, for the Piano-Forte, by D. Steibelt. Price 1s. 6d. Longman and Broderip.

Mr. Steibelt has bestowed much care on this little melody. The additional paffages, with which he has drawn out the piece to a length proper for a pianoforte exercife, are perfectly in character with the original matter, and are introduced with much judgment and contrivance. We particularly notice the relief afforded by the employment of the major of the key, which at once gives a varied fweetness to the expreffion, and marks the character of the air.

The favourite Air danced by Mr. and Mrs. LABORIE, in the Ballet of "L'Offrande a Therpficare, arranged as a Rondo for the Piano-Forte, by D. Steibelt. Price Is. Longman and Broderip. This justly favourite air is here worked into a highly attractive Rondo. happy management of the digreffions evince great judgment in the above mafter, and strongly recommend the piece. The character and genius of the piano-forte is well confulted in all the additional paffages, and the whole fo happily blended as to form an agreeable fonata.

"The Naval Battle and Defeat of the Dutch Fleet, by Admiral Duncan;" a characteriftic Sonata, for the Piano-Forte, compofed by J. L. Duffeck. Price 35.

Corri and Duffeck.

We are still deftined to lead our readers into scenes of human flaughter, horrr, and diffonance-much against our inclination: but, while the fons of harmony are pleased to affume the character and office of the priests of difcord, it becomes our duty, however painful, to attend their fanguinary rites. The preLent piece commences with Admiral Duncan's fignal to his fquadron " to go in purfuit of the Dutch."-" They hoitt their fails; "then" fet fail."-"The enemy's fleet is in view;"" a general purfuit by the English-nearly within gun-fhot.-The Dutch endeavour to avoid the English-The English admirab gives fignal for engagement.-Joy and refolution of the British failors.-Engage ment.-Admiral Duncan breaks through the enemy's line.-The Dutch fhips lofe fome of their mafts ;-their defeat ;-they strike.-Shouts of victory.-The British admiral gives orders to fail for England. -The difabled thips give figuals of diftrefs.-The news arrives in town.-General rejoicings." pal topics which Mr. DUSSECK has
felected for imitation, and, in which, for
the most part, he has greatly fucceeded.
The ideas are frequently new and ftrik-
ing while, in many places, the com-
binations and modulations are masterly
and fearned. The road of nature is not
always kept, yet the bye-paths, however
intricate and perplexed, have generally
the property of bringing back the va-
grant author to the broad and fimple
tract; and the whole certainly forms an
excellent practical leffon for the inftru-
ment for which it is profeffedly compofed.
Six favourite German Waltzes, arranged for
the Piano-Forte. Price Is.
Prefton and Son.

We find much to admire in these little pieces. They are, as their character demanded, eafy, fimple, and fhort; uncommonly pleafing in their ftyle, and calculated to improve the juvenile practitioner.

Skillern.

This fonata, though not in the first rank of piano-forte compofitions, certainly poffeffes many pleafing paffages; and in fome places difcovers a refpectable degree of fcience. The opening, which is an Adagio in common time, is ftriking, and excellently preparative to the fucceeding movement. We cannot entirely approve of modulations fo violently digreffive, as fome which we have met with; as in page 3 and 4, where "wantonnefs and affection feem to ufurp the place of judgment and fober learning. The Andante is very agreeable, and its fubject happily relieved by the Minore, while the minuet which it introduces is genteel and elegant, and concludes the piece with an impreffion highly favourable to its character.

A Second Collection of Canzonets, and a Glee for Three Voices, with Accompaniments for the Piano Forte or Harp, compofed by T. Fiffin. Price 7s. 6d. Jones and Holland. We find fix canzonets in this collection, moft of which are conceived in a very engaging ftyle. The fubje&t and caft of the words, are not every where attended to with that precifion which forms the chief feature of all vocal compofitions, neither are they wholly neglected The accent (as in the firft bar of the canzonet) is fometimes falfely laid, but the truth and force of the emphafis, in general, forms an allowable fet-off, against

that defect, and imparts a valuable qua-
lity to the melody. The glee, which
clofes the collection, is fimple and plea-
fing. It poffeffes no counter-point, or
marks of harmonical contrivance, but is
an agreeable melody harmonized.
"The Cottagers ;" a Glee for Three Voices,
alfo a favourite Round, compofed by L
Atterbury. Price s. 6d.

Jones and Holiand.
"The Cottagers" is an ingenious
compofition. The parts are difpofed
with judgment, and, confidering the
general poverty of the choral music of
modern days, are closely wove. The
round is evidently from the fame expe-
rienced author. Its melody is easy and
flowing, and different voices are inter-
mingled with much dexterity and art.
"In vain we fill the fparkling bowl," an
Anacreontic Song, fung by Mr. Burrows,
at Freemafon's Hall, compofed by T. B.
Schroeder. Price Is. Jones and Holland.
We find much Bacchanalian fpirit in
this fong. The melody, though not
ftrikingly novel, is free and open, and
the introductory and concluding fympho-
nies, both infpirit and enrich the com-
pofition.

Many of the airs, duetts, &c. collected" in this publication, are highly defirabie. The work is printed in a convenient portable fize, and cannot but be found exceedingly convenient to the amateurs of light, eafy, fafhionable, and familiar mufic. We find in the prefent numbers, the celebrated dance in Paul et Virgi nie"-a juftly favourite Swifs air-the well received trio," Here's a health to all good laffes" and feveral others in

Farewell the Beams of early Day; a new Song written by Peter Pindar, fet to Mufic by J. Ambrofe. Price Is. Riley.

The melody of this fong contains fome very attractive paffages. The modulation into the fifth of the original key, at the words" And fpectres feem to haunt the fhade," and the introduction of the natural feventh towards the clofe, are inftances in proof of much sweetness of fancy, and

juftly recommend the compofition. But we are obliged to obferve, that Mr. AMBROSE, in this fong, as well as in fome other of his productions, has not been fufficiently attentive in the choice of his bafs. The laft bar but one of the melody now before us, is the only example we fhall at prefent point out, of impropriety in this particular.
