HEREFORDSHIRE.

TheHerefordshire and Gloucestershire canal, from Gloucester to Ledbury, is completed. The opening of this navigation took place on the 30th of March, when several of the proprietors and gentlemen of the committée em

barked at the junction of the coal branch near Newent, in the first veffel freighted with merchandize configned to Ledbury, which was followed by three others laden with coal. They paffed through the tunnel at Oxenhall, which is 2192 yards in length, in the fpace of 52 minutes, and were met at the extremity by feveral gentlemen, and entertained with a cold collation at the Boyce, the feat of Mr. MOGGERIDGE, one of the proprietors of the valuable coal mines recently opened at Oxenhall. Both ends of the tunnel, as well as the banks of the canal, were lined with fpectators, who hailed the boats with reiterated acclamations. It is fuppofed that upwards of 2000 perfons were prefent on their arrival at Ledbury (a diftance of about nine miles), which they reached in four hours. A dinner was provided on the occafion at the George Inn, where the greatest conviviality prevailed, and feveral appropriate toafts were drank. The advantages which muft refult from this inland navigation to Ledbury and the adjoining country are incal culable. In the article of coal, the inha bitants of this diftrict will reap an important benefit by the immediate reduction in price of at least ten shillings per ton. Coals of the firit quality are now delivered at the wharf clofe to Ledbury, at 135 6d. whereas the common price was formerly 24s. per ton.

At Stagfden, in confequence of a violent kick from a horfe, which he was endeavouring to catch for the purpofe of fetching a midwife to the affistance of his wife, John Bird, a labourer in hufbandry. The poor man languished in great agony till the evening of the next day.

CAMBRIDGE.

The long litigated caufe between this univerity and the occupiers of the Downing eftate, of which the latter have had poffeffion upwards of 30 years, is finally determined in favour of the univerfity. The lord chancellor has accordingly ordered a receiver for the univerfity to be appointed immediately. The arrears of the eftate will be more than fufficient to erect the new college, which is to be founded, purfuant to the will of Sir Jaccb Downing, under the title of Downing college.
