REVIEW OF NEW MUSICAL PUBLICATIONS. 451

Collection of favourite Songs, fung by Mr. Dignum, Mr. Denman, Mrs. Mountain, the two Mifs Howells, and Mrs. Franklin, at Vauxhall Gardens; compofed by James Hook. 3s. ift book.

Bland and Weller.

Mr. Hook, who is still the Vauxhall ballad-mafter; fills that department with novelty and sprightlinefs of fancy. In the prefent collection we find, many fweet and ftriking paffages to prove, that voluminous as his efforts are in this way, he has by no means out-written himself. The first fong, "Lillies and Rofes,) fung by Mifs F. HOWELLS, is a pleafing little air in 6-8 andantino; many bars of which, if not perfectly new, are engaging and animating; and the notes giyen to Buy my Sweet Briar, Sweet Lillies and Rofes," moft happily expreffive of the words. "Come buy my Wooden Ware," fung by Mr. DIGNUM, is not among the belt conftructed melodies in the collection, but certainly carries with it the character of the compofer, and is well adapted to Mr. DIGNUM's voice and ftyle of performance. The third fong, "The Little Singing Girl," fung by Mrs. MOUNTAIN, is gaily conceived, and leaves an intereft ing impreffion on the ear. "As forth Irang'd the Banks of Tweed," fung by Mrs. FRANKLIN, is in the Scottish tafte, and poffeffes much merit; but, like moft of Mr. Hook's Caledonian melodies, lofes its truth of character, by the too frequent introduction of the fourth and feventh of the key. The fifth air, "Love's Telegraph," fung by Mr. DIGNUM, is not remarkable for its animation or pleafantnefs; but " Drink to the Girls left behind us," fung by Mr. DENMAN, is characterised by that vivacity and loofe eafy caft of air which form the diftinguishing features of a fea fong. "How tedious, alas! are the Hours,' fung by Nis. FRANKLIN, is a fweetly fimple little melody, and calculated to produce as agreeable an effect in the chamber, as in the gardens or theatre. The laft fong, "Young Jemmy is a pleafing Youth," fung by Mrs. MoUNTAIN, though not itrikingly new, is finooth and natural, and finishes the collection in a style creditable to the author.

The three Sonatas for the pedal harp, with an Accompaniment for the tambourino, ad libitum; compofed and dedicated to Mifs Saunders, by G. G. Ferrari.

Skillern. After a minute examination of these

Sonatas, we have the pleasure to be able to pronounce them excellent compofitions. They are written in a ftyle rather familiar; yet difplay much elegance of imagination. The feveral movements are calculated to relieve each other, and to produce, by their well-difpofed lights and fhades, that picturefque effect which every compofer of judgment endeavours to attain. Were we to point out the best piece in the fet, perhaps ftrict juftice would direct us to the third; but the first and fecond are the most popular in their caft, and of merit fufficient to support the reputation of their author. Fifty felect Tunes, carefully adapted to the beft parts of the first ninety-fix Pfalms, by J. Charlesworth. 7s. 6d.

Longman and Broderip. Thefe tunes are chofen with judgment, and adapted with ability. A fecond, or under part, is added throughout the collection; and the whole forms a publication particularly eligible for the Sunday ufe of private families.

We entirely agree with Mr. Charle worth, that all palm tunes ought to be fo compofed as that people in general. may readily acquire the melody: we alfo fubfcribe to his opinion, that the best are the easiest; but we cannot think with him, that what he terms lively pfalmody is more impreffive than the grave and flow. Without a certain degree of that dignity and importance which refults from the majestic march of notes properly held out, the mind is not exalted to that holy fervour, that pious folemnity, characteristic of facred worship, and which leaves, in the heart, an impreffion greatly fuperior to the light and tranfient effects of a more volatile fucceffion of founds. No. III. Of Guida Armonica; or, an Intro-. duction to the General Knowledge of Mufic, Theoretical and Practical, by J. Rolfe. 4s. 6d. Skillern. The author having, in the two former numbers of this didactic publication, exhibited the diatonic arrangement of the feven notes of the major and minor fcales in melody, or fucceffion of founds, now proceeds to fhew the principles on which thefe founds are combined; elucidates the firft principles of refonance, and enters upon the doctrine of the harmonics, The ftudent is then prefented with the harmonic triad, or perfect common chord; the different pofitions of combination; and with examples for filling up the exercifes in all the various keys, major and minor. The great labour which this work muft have coft Mr. RELFE,

has been, for the most part, very fuccefsfully employed. The different objects of inftruction are arranged with judgment, and his ideas explained with perfpicuity. We cannot, therefore, difmifs the article without beftowing upon it a confiderable portion of praife, and recommending it to the fedulous attention of all mufical ftudents.

"Black Beard," a grand ballet fpectacle, as performed at the Royal Circus; compofed and adapted for the piano-forte, by J. Sanderfon.35. Longman and Broderip. Mr. SANDERSON, in the ballet of "Black Beard," has evinced increafing mufical knowledge, and an improving fancy. The overture poffeffes much variety, and is fo ingeniously conftructed in its parts as to produce an effect at once ftriking and truly theatrical. The firft chorus While the jolly Grog's afloat," is an open, generous ftrain, and the different voices are well combined. Some paffages in the "Boatfwain's Solo," are much above mediocrity, particularly the divifion given at "We dafh o'er the Deep." The pirate's glee, " An Enemy appears," is characteristic, but certainly fomewhat common-place. "My Willy was a failor bold," fung by Mrs. HERBERT, is tenderly expreffive, and relieved with powerful effect, by the fuc eeding Battle Piece, in which we find much fire and energy of expreffion. "In the good fhip Revenge," fung by Mr. HELME, is bold and broad in its ftyle, and happily contrafted by the fmooth, eafy flow of My friend when a captive," fung by Mrs. HERBERT. The flave's dances are prettily imagined, and exhibit a lively conception of character and fcenic effect, while the dialogue and duett "No longer heave the heart-felt figh," fung by Mr. and Mrs. HERBERT, is ingeniously conftructed, and concludes the piece in a ftyle confonant with the compofer's general fuccefs in this fpecies of compofition.

The Sylvan Oracles and the Sylphids, two fongs, containing four airs for the voice, harpfichord, or violin; compofed by Richard Rhodes. 3s. Preston. We find much native taste in thefe compofitions. The paflages are all pleafing, and many of them somewhat original; but we are obliged to obferve, that they are not fufficiently connected to difguife that the author is but little in the habit of compofing. The expreffion is juft, the modulation good, and the bafs frequently well chofen: in a word, the prefent work is an indication of real

genius, and induces us to recommend
Mr. RHODES to a clofe and conftant
ftudy of compofition; by which we are
certain he would foon arrive at excellence
as a compofer.

The favourite duet of "Tink a Tink," fung
by Mrs. Bland and Mr. Bannister, jun. in
the opera of Blue Beard; arranged as a
rondo for the piano-forte, by D. Steibelt.
2s. 6d.
Longman and Broderip.
"Tink a Tink," as here ingeni-
oufly arranged by Mr. STEIBALT, forms
a pleafing rondo for the piano forte, and
will be found improving to the finger of
the young practitioner. The favourite
duet fung by Mrs. CROUCH and Mifs
DE CAMP, in the blue chamber, is intro-
duced in the piece, as alfo the two prin
cipal choruffes in the opera, the whole
of which are incorporated with much
theoretical addrefs, and reflect confider-
able honour on this ingenious musician.
Overture to the Algerine Corfair, as per-
formed at the Royal Circus; compofed and
arranged for the piano-forte, by J. Sander-
Jon. 28.
Riley.

This overture comprifes two movements; the first of which is in largo, the fecond in common time, allegro moderato. The one is happily introductory to the other, and the general effect perfectly adapted to the fubject of the piece. We are obliged to obferve, that fome little negligences in the harmony occur; fuch, for inftance, as the two confecutive octaves in the fourth line of the fifth page, which we notice rather, to point out to Mr. SAUNDERSON how eafy fuch difallowances are to be avoided, than to infer that they form any great drawbacks to the general merit of the compofition. Numbers V and VI. Of Apollo et Terpfichore, 'continued monthly. 1s. 6d. each number. Rolfe.

The prefent number fupport the credit, and compleat the first volume, of this agreeable and ferviceable little work. Upon reviewing the contents of this volume, we find in it thirty-feven movements, vocal and inftrumental; much the greater part of which are selected with tafte, and greatly calculated to improve the tyro in mufic. Numbers V. and VI. Of the Naval and Military Gentleman's complete Mufical Compendium. Is. 6d. each number. Rolfe.

This work, fo accommodating in its plan, to those who are partial to martial mufic, proceeds with articles of the fame rank of merit as thofe with which it commenced. Such pieces as the Grand March in Rinaldo, The Westminster

"Country and Town," a parody on Captain Morris's Town and Country," fung by Mr. Dignum, at the Theatre Royal, Drurylane; compofed by Mr. Moulds. IS.

Skillern. "Country and Town," is not one of thofe productions that can greatly add to the reputation of Mr. MOULDS as a compofer: its material defects are the want of originality, and the ill choice of
