ERIE CANAL, SECTION 1.

Annual report of Oscar F. Potter, Sup't.

To the Hon. Sup't of Public Works of the State of New York: SIR-I have the honor to submit herewith my yearly report for the fiscal year ending on September 30, 1881, of work accomplished and money expended and received on section one of the Erie canal, and to recommend such repairs as are deemed necessary for the coming season.

Section one of the Erie canal extends from the south end of the Albany basin to the west end of the lower Mohawk aqueduct, and includes also the Champlain canal from its junction with the Erie to the end of the stone wall at the guard-lock on the north side of the Mohawk river, a distance in all of nearly 16 miles.

Locks and lock-gates.-Repairs of more or less magnitude have been made to nearly all locks and lock-gates on the section since October 1, 1880. The principal repairs enumerated are as follows:

Lock No. 1.-Four new upper gates, three new lower gates, fourteen new valves, three collars, one stirrup-iron, three running planks, ten fender planks.

Lock No. 2.-Seven new valves, new bottom in lock, one new mitre-sill, two new bridges, four running planks, eight fender planks. Lock No. 3.-Four new toe-posts, one new heel-post, five new valves, two old valves repaired, one collar, one bridge railing, three running planks, fifteen fender planks.

Lock No. 4.-One new upper gate, two new valves, two new balance-beams, three collars, one anchor, one stirrup-iron, three bucking timbers, bottom of lock repaired, two mitre-sills repaired, two bridges repaired, seven running planks, ten fender planks.

Lock No. 5.-Two new lower gates, three new balance-beams, four new valves, two new mitre-sills, two collars, one stirrup-iron, two anchors, two bridge railings, bottoms of locks repaired, one mitre-sill repaired, two running planks, six fender planks.

Lock No. 6.-One new upper gate, one new toe-post, two new valves, one new balance-beam, two new bucking-beams, one new mitre-sill and apron, three collars, one lamp-post, one bridge railing, five running planks, nine fender planks.

Lock No. 7.-One new upper gate, two new balance-beams, two new bucking-beans, two new valves, one collar, two connecting rods, one bridge railing, one mitre-sill repaired, one bridge repaired, three running planks, fourteen fender planks.

Lock No. 8.-One new toe-post, two new bucking-beams, two new collars, one anchor, twelve running planks, eleven fender planks.
