GRUBIANA:

Grubftreet Journal, No 2.
The ODE for the YEAR 1730:

RECITATIVO.

ANUS! the fhining round furvey,
Where all is pompous, all is gay.
Hence far düller cares with dull fpleen are
flown.

O! joyous thou thy felf appear,

To welcome in the new born year;

And in thy younger face a look of fmiles put on.

AIR.

Happy, happy, BRITISH climes,
Fruitful of SATURNIAN times!
How fair arise their fhady woods!
How fmoothly flow their filver floods!
Crown'd with CERES laughs each field,
And verdant viftos meadows yield!

RECITATIVO.

But what are charms of woods, or fields, or meads,
To thofe more heav'nly charms that freedom fpreads?
From freedom all our taftes of pleasure spring;
And the rich fauce of freedom is the king.

AIR.

Sweet are the jes'min's breathing flow'rs;
Sweet the foft-falling vernal fhow'rs;
And sweet the glooms the grove affords ;
And sweet the notes of warbling birds:
But not the groves, nor rains, nor flow'rs,
Can ever sweet or pleafing be,

O! lovely freedom, without thee.

RECITAT TIVO.

No wonder that fo oft BRITANNIA fought,
Thy bleffings, goddess, to attain ;

No wonder thee fo oft fhe fearless fought,
Thro' feas of blood and hills of flain.

AIR.

But let the feeds of peace,
Still more and more encrease:
Let truth with virtue meet;
And mercy juftice greet:
Let friendship reign with love,
As join'd they reign above.

RECITATIVO.

With harmony begin the year;

Such as may footh the niceft ear:
Such as the royal race may deign to hear.

CHORU S.

"As harmony the day begun

JANUARY 30.

HERE PETERS, CALAMY, and MANTON ftood,
Calling in fcripture phrase for STRAFFORD's blood:

Where to your tents, O ISRAEL, was cry'd;

And proverbs oft, and prophecies apply'd :

Where curfe ye MEROZ, twang'd through nofe aloud,
With rage inflam'd the long-ear'd, rebel croud:
