Scribes and Pharifees of old, though with a far different meaning, for by them it was spoken in fcorn and derifion, but with us it is the language of devout admiration. We are made partakers of his love: According to our advancement and growth in grace, we receive the communications of his mercy and bleffing-to the first born according to his birth-right, and to the youngest according to his youth, for he knows the feveral ftates and circumftances of each of us, who we are, what we have done, and how we ftand affected towards him. They whofe hearts are pure and uncorrupted by the world; like Benjamin, the younger brother, who was not confenting to the deed and counfel of his brethren, and was more nearly related to Jofeph than the reft; fhall be most plentifully ferved by the mafter of the

feaft. They who priding themfelves in the attainments of human science look with contempt on the fimplicity of God's people, are the Egyptians who difdain to eat bread with the Hebrews, but fit apart by themselves; ftill are They fed from the mafter's table. All that is good and true of human knowledge, though the pride of fcience will not own it, is of divine original. Both the Egyptian as well as the Hebrew received their meat from Jofeph and both Jew and Gentile, the fimple believer and the profound reafoner,receive all the knowledge and wifdom they poffefs from Chrift: It is his hand that feeds them, whether they acknowledge him or not He giveth food to All flesh, becaufe his mercy endureth for ever.

Earthen O friends, drink O beloved...____ When ye feast with Chrift, ye need fear no excess, the new wine of the kingdom exhilarates, but not intoxicates; it ennobles, not degrades our nature. Draw near with a true heart and faith unfeigned, and you will find a welcome at the table of your Lord, and fhall want no manner of thing that is good. Only let your brother Benjamin be with you

BRETHREN.

GENESIS, xliv. 12.
