the man in whofe hand the cup is found, he fhall be my fervant: Is then the cup of falvation found in our hands, let us reftore it unto its rightful owner, and give unto the Lord the honour due unto his name. SALVATION BELONGETH UNTO GOD; and they only with whom it is found, they shall be his fervants.

BUT is there no Judah to come near, and plead for the brethren who are thus rejected by the spiritual Jofeph ? Is there no interceffor for repentant finners, who come to implore mercy?

no one to avert the wrath of God, and to ftand forward with an 0 let not my Lord be angry, and I will speak? Yes; Jefus, our Advocate with the Father, will perform for us the office of Judah as well as that of Jofeph: He will be our interceffor, as well as our judge:

He will be furety for us; at his hands will God require us; and if he bring us not unto him and fet us before him, then will he bear the blame for ever. The glory

Every finner faved, is a jewel in his The scheme of his falvation is one continued effort and endeavour to reconcile men to God and to each other, to make us all one family, under one head, Himself the great Householder, and we his fervants and stewards, fed from the munificence of his bounty, and governed according to his laws. While with Jofeph he deals harfhly with us, with Judah he pleads for us, and with Benjamin he mediates, and is the way of our access to God, without whom, no man cometh to the Father. Nor let it feem ftrange that the fame glorious Perfon fhould be typified under different characters, for his

perfections are infinite, and finite beings, fuch as mortal men, can but imperfectly represent his infinity. All men are indeed images of God and of Chrift. All the children of our heavenly Father bear about them fome feature of refemblance to their common Parent, one after this manner, and another after that manner. Jofeph fhews forth his greatnefs, Judah his benignity, and Benjamin his mediation, nay all the fons of Jacob, and all the perfonages of the Old Teftament, reprefent fome attribute of Chrift, though but imperfectly, for they were finful and mortal men, and in that refpect, bore him no refemblance. Their several virtues were but fo many faint emanations from His goodness, like the ftars which fhine with a light not their own but borrowed from the fun; they differ in

deed in glory, but in the presence of him to whom they owe their luftre, they all alike difappear. More than Jofeph, or Benjamin, or Judah is Jefus, the GREAT ANTITYPE of all faints: We may therefore addrefs him in the words of the Pfalmift alluding to the hiftory before us Give ear, O thou Shepherd of Ifrael, thou that leadeft Fofeph like a flock-fhew thyfelf alfo thou that dwelleft between the Cherubims!. Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manaffeh, ftir up thy ftrength and come and fave us. Turn us again, O God! fhew the Light of thy Countenance and we shall be whole.
