thou and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks and thy herds, and all that thou haft.

AND to words of kindness are added all the endearments of behaviour, which could affure them of his affectionate regard, and tender concern for their welfare He fell on his brother Benjamin's neck and wept, moreover he kiffed all his brethren and wept upon them; and after that, his brethren talked with him.

SWEET intercourfe, for those whose

hearts had been eftranged from each other, to be thus united in fraternal amity! Look ye, malicious and revengeful, who cherifh with obdurate hatred the remembrance of a real or fuppofed affront, and are deaf to the overtures of peace and reconciliation Say if you can behold unmoved

the tears of Jofeph, as he embraces his repentant brethren, and assures them with words of comfort and forgivenefs Say if you can refufe to imitate an example so worthy of all imitation Go then to your brethren who have offended you, or whom you have offended, and tell them willing to forgive willing to take them once more to your bofom, and to obliterate every refentiment of past unkindness.

THE report that Jofeph's brethren were come, reached the ears of Pharaoh, and it pleafed him well. Though it was a time of fcarcity, and they were like to be a charge to him, yet was he glad of the opportunity of expreffing his gratitude to Jofeph, by fhewing kindnefs to his family. He too defires them to bring their father

into Egypt, promifes them the good of the land, and furnishes them with provifions and carriages for the journey: And, that they might not regret the leaving behind them fuch of their houfe-hold goods as could not eafily be tranfported fo great a distance, he adds alfo regard not your fluff, for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours.

THUS are all things prepared for the bringing down the whole family of Jacob into Egypt. Befides furnishing them with provifion for the way, Jofeph difmiffes his brethren laden. with rich presents both for themselves and their father; to all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of filver, and five changes of raiment. And laft of all he cautions them, to fee that they fall not out by the way.

Is then a gleam of fun-fhine once more to gild the hoary head of aged Jacob? Shall joy fparkle in that countenance, fo long inured to affliction's bitter cup, and the venerable old man at length clofe in peace his weary eyelids? Yes, for already are his fons haftening back with the welcome news, that he who fpake fo roughly unto them, the lord of the country, who detained Simeon, nd demanded Benjamin, is no other than Jofeph, their long loft, and much lamented brother.

THE impatience of Jacob for their return, may more eafily be conceived than defcribed. It was with extreme reluctance that he confented to the departure of Benjamin, with fcarce a hope of ever seeing him again: And now perhaps he forebodes fome mif

chief to have befallen him, or else they would have returned the fecond time.

WHILE he was thus mufing, his fons arrive, and acquaint their father that Fofeph is fill alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. News fo unexpected, is more than he can bear; more than he can believe to be true

And Jacob's heart fainted, becaufe he believed them not.

THEY told him all the words of Jofeph, which he faid unto them, his great advancement in the court of Pharaoh, and his earneft defire to provide for them in Egypt during the five remaining years of the famine. And when he faw the waggons which Jofeph had fent to carry him—a fplendid train approaching the Patriarch's homely tent-the Spirit of Jacob their father revived; and
