How swiftly does the course of time, like the current of fome mighty ftream, bear away fucceffive generations of men! We who fo lately witneffed the dying fcenes of the father, now approach to contemplate the clofing moments of the fon., We behold Jofeph arrived at the age of an hundred and ten years. He has lived to fee the pofterity of his fons Ephraim's children of the third generation, and the children of Machir the fon of Manaffes, brought up upon his knees to receive of him, as their fathers did from Jacob, the bleffing of a dying patriarch. With his dying. breath he expreffes his faith in God, and affures his brethren of the fulfilment of the divine promifes. He charges them to keep his bones unburied, till the day fhould come, when they fhould be fettled in the land of Canaan; and, like his father, he exacts of them a

promife, with an oath, that they would bury him there. So Jofeph died, being an hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

BUT not in Egypt did the bones of Jofeph moulder into duft. Like Jacob, it was his dying hope, to be gathered unto his fathers: In this coffin, therefore, are his bones preferved, till the deliverance of the children of Ifracl out of Egypt. As they journey through the wilderness, the bones of Jofeph travel with them: And when they arrive at the promifed land of their inheritance, then do thefe find their refting-place in Canaan.

So when our SPIRITS quit this mortal clay, they find not here their burying place. In this Egypt we fojourn

for awhile, but Canaan is our ever-
lafting home: Thither our hopes and
wifhes tend; nor contented reft, till
fafely lodgedwhere the defire of
every wandering heart muft ultimately
centre in the bofom of our Father
and our God.
