The death of Chrift decifively proved his huma nity. Accordingly, his Apostles exprefsly call him a man whom God raised from the dead. Acts ii. 22 to 24; xvii. 31.

Subd. 2. Chrift will raise all mankind from the dead.

John v. 21. As the Father raiseth up the dead, and giveth them life; fo the Son likewife giveth life to whom he will. Ver. 28. The hour cometh, in which all that are in the fepulchres fhall hear his voice, and fhall come forth. See alfo vi. 40, 44, 54; Thefs. iv. 14, 16.

Subd. 3. Chrift will judge and recompenfe all mankind in the future life.

: John v. 22. For neither doth the Father judge any man; but hath committed all judgment to the

Son, ver. 27. He (the Father) hath given him. (the Son) authority to exercise judgment also, because he is a Son of man. Ver. 30. Of myself I can do nothing; as I hear I judge &c. fee ver. 29. Acts x. 42. God commanded that we should preach to the people, and testify, that it is he (Jesus, ver. 38;) whom God hath appointed to be the judge of the living and of the dead. 2 Cor. v. 10. For we must all appear before the judgment-feat of Chrift; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to what he hath done, whether it be good or bad. See alfo Rom. xiv. 9, 10; ii. 16; Matt. xxv. 31, &c. 2 Tim. iv. 1, 8. Acts xvii. 31. God hath fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness, ev avde, by ανδρι a man whom he hath appointed, of which appointment he hath given a proof to all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. And, Matt. xxv. 40, Jefus represents himself as calling human beings his brethren, even while he is exercifing the high office of the univerfal judge and recompenfer of mankind. Alfo Rev. xxii. 12. Behold, I will come quickly; and my reward will be with me, to give unto every man according as his work fhall be. Ver. 16. I Jesus have fent my meffenger to teftify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offfpring of David. Comp. Ifai. xi. 1, 10; Heb. vii. 14.

CHAPTER II.

Titles and Characters of Jefus fimilar to thofe which are applied to other men.

SECTION I.

The head, and chief, corner ftone.

Ifai. xxviii. 16. Thus faith the Lord God, behold, I lay in Sion for a foundation stone, an approved ftone, a corner tone, precious, immoveably fixed; he that believeth in him fhall not be confounded. Quoted 1 Pet. ii. 6; comp. Job xxxviii. 6; Dan. ii. 34, 35, 44.

Matt xxi. 42. Jefus faid unto them, (the chief priests and elders, ver. 23,) did ye never read in the Scriptures, the ftone which the builders rejected This is the is become the head ftone of the corner. Ephes. ii. 20. Ye are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jefus Chrift himself being the chief corner Stone.

Stone and corner ftone are alfo applied to different human beings as names of diftinction and preemi

nence.

Jerem. li. 25, 26. O destroying mountain, (Babylon,) they fhall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations, but thou shalt be defolate for ever, faith the Lord; i. e. they fhall no longer have kings and governors taken from among themselves, but they fhall be under the dominion of foreigners. Blayney's note. Pfa. cxliv. 12. That our fons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones polished (Heb. cut) after the fimilitude of a palace.

Matt.

xvi. 18. I fay unto thee, that thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of death fhall not prevail against it. Alfo John i. 42. Peter first preached the Gospel to Jews, Acts ii. 14, &c. and to Gentiles, Acts x. 34, &c. but the apostles in general and prophets are called the foundation, Ephes. ii. 20.

SECT. II.

The true Vine.

John xv. 1. I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Ver. 5. I am the vine, ye are the branches.

Jerem. ii. 21. I had planted thee (Ifrael, ver. 14,) a noble vine, wholly a right feed, how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me? Pfa. lxxx. 7, 8. O God of hosts, thou haft brought a vine out of Egypt; thou haft caft

out the heathen and planted it. Ver. 14. Behold and vifit this vine; ver. 15, and the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted. Hofea x. 1. Ifrael is an empty vine. See also Ifai. xvi. 8, &c. Jerem. xlviii. 32, &c. Ifai. v. I to 7.

SEC. III.

Sun of righteousness.

Mal. iv. 2. Unto you that fear my name shall the fun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings. Ifai. lxi. 3. That they (the Ifraelites) might be called trees of righteoufnefs, the planting of the Lord. Heb. vii. 1, 2. Melchifedec being, by interpretation, king of righteousness.

SEC. IV.

The bright morning Star.

Rev. xxii. 16. I Jefus am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning Star.

Civil and ecclefiaftical rulers are called stars in Scripture. Dan. viii. 10. The horn grew up even to the host of heaven, and when it had thrown down to the ground fome of the host, and of the stars, (Jewish rulers) it trampled upon them. Matt. xxiv. 29. The ftars (Jewish rulers) will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be fhaken. Rev. i. 20. The seven stars are the meffengers (or elders,
