PART II. STATISTICS OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK. / POST OFFICES AND POSTMASTERS With the Distances from the Cities of New York and Albany. The following List of Post Offices, &c., is prepared for this work from recently corrected statements furnished by the Post Office Department, Washington City. To add to its value, we have given the distances to each Post Office from the city of New York-which are not stated in the General Post Office List. We have, therefore, carefully calculated the distances from this city to the places in counties north and west of Albany, in most cases, by way of that city, and those to other parts of the State by routes the most frequently travelled. Thus, the distances to places in the south-western counties are generally stated either by way of the New York and Erie Rail Road, or by stage roads leading from Newburgh, Kingston, or Catskill. The following counties are situated on the route of the New York and Erie Rail Road, viz: Rockland, Orange, Sullivan, Delaware, Broome, Tioga, Chemung, Steuben, Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauque. Distances by way of Newburgh, Kingston, or Catskill, are calculated for parts of Orange, Sullivan, Ulster, Greene, Delaware, Otsego, Chenango, and Tompkins counties. The Post Offices printed in SMALL CAPITALS are those situated at the county seats of the respective counties. Albany, Jas. D. Wasson, 145 |
