PREFACE. In preparing for the press the present volume of the New York Annual Register, it has been the object of the author to present, in a condensed form, the subjects of the most material information comprised in former volumes of the work, which experience has demonstrated to be the most valuable for reference; thus enabling the publishers to afford the book at a price reduced one half from that of former years. How far he has succeeded, it is left to the public to judge. It is confidently believed, however, that a great proportion of subscribers and patrons will be better pleased with a volume filled principally with useful statistics, than with long lists of names of individuals, which from the rapidity with which changes take place under our Democratic institutions, can be generally of but temporary value. The first volume in the series of this Register was issued early in the year 1830, and was the result of an original design and plan of the present author, to supply in a convenient form for public use, a manual for reference, combining a greater variety of statistical information than any other work of the kind published in the United States. Although not always adequately supported by public patronage, the publication was continued annually, with increasing favor, for eight years, viz: until 1837, when the embarrassments of that year affecting business men generally, operated to diminish the patronage of the Register to such an extent as to discourage both publishers and author, and the work was therefore suspended until 1840. The sales of the volume for that year, although nearly equal to expectation, were not sufficiently encouraging to induce the compiler to continue his labors for the public, particularly as a publication evidently in imitation of "Williams's Annual Register," was commenced at Albany in the year 1843. With the publication of the work referred to, called "The N. Y. State Register," (being the same name as a work by R. S. Skinner, published 4 in 1830 and 1831, but on a plan quite different,) it may be superfluous to add, that the author of this has never had any connection, however much he may feel complimented at the close imitation of his own, in the plan and construction of that work. Trusting that his contemplated arrangements, and the continued favor of the public may enable the author, and his successors, for the future to issue this work punctually at an early period every year, with many improvements, and at a price so low as to be satisfactory to all his patrons, thus making this, in conformity to its name, "The New York Annual Register;" this tenth volume of the series is now respectfully committed to the support of an intelligent community.
