Science and philosophy have been ploughing over the sod on which grow the wheat and the tares of the world's religious and theological beliefs. The plan has been to root out the tares and give their room and their nourishment to the wheat,-a laudable intention which, however, has met with the difficulty of deciding first of all which really are the tares. In this decision, reason has been called upon to set up a court of appeal. A reasonable faith, a belief which, far from stultifying the intellect, satisfies its broadest claims, -this has been the demand of modern times upon the religious world; and it is only a reinforcement of Peter's exhortation to the early Christians: "Be ready always to give answer to any man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you." But the reason has not always been forthcoming on inquiry, and when it has, science has not always been ready to accept it. She has been skeptical especially toward the miraculous, regarding a belief in it as opposed to the validity of her own discoveries and as indicating a weak and credulous state of mind.
