This table shows that the percentage of strikes ordered by labor organizations varied from 8.74 per cent in hosiery and knit goods to 94.32 per cent in blacksmithing and horseshoeing. Some of the principal industries show the following percentages of strikes ordered by labor organizations: Building trades 92.39 per cent, men's clothing 90.24 per cent, coal and coke 56.38 per cent, cotton goods 24.36 per cent, foundries and machine shops 70.09 per cent, railroad transportation 39.29 per cent.

The percentage of establishments involved in strikes ordered by labor organizations varied from 18.85 per cent in woolen goods to 98.86 per cent in the bakery industry. The percentage in building trades was 98.03 per cent, in men's clothing 98.64 per cent, in coal and coke 81.27 per cent, in cotton goods 36.66 per cent, in foundries and machine shops 88.99 per cent, and in railroad transportation 47.64 per cent.

The table presenting similar data by States and geographical divisions follows:

STRIKES AND ESTABLISHMENTS INVOLVED IN STRIKES ORDERED BY LABOR ORGANIZATIONS AND NOT SO ORDERED, BY STATES AND GEOGRAPHICAL DIVISIONS, 1881 TO 1905.

[See Table VIII, pages 492 to 495, for notes relating to strikes not reported whether ordered or not ordered and general strikes extending into two or more States.]

The percentage of strikes ordered by labor organizations within each State varied from 34.62 per cent in North Dakota to 100 per cent in Nevada. In the latter State, however, there were but 4 strikes during the period. The percentages of strikes ordered by labor organizations in some of the principal industrial States were as follows: New York 83.82 per cent, Pennsylvania 51.78 per cent, Illinois. 77.54 per cent, Ohio 62.30 per cent, and Massachusetts 60.78 per cent.

The percentage of establishments involved in strikes ordered by labor organizations varied from 50 per cent in North Dakota to 100 per cent in Nevada. The percentages in some of the principal industrial States were: New York 94.86 per cent, Pennsylvania 86.19 per cent, Illinois 95.02 per cent, Ohio 86.23 per cent, and Massachusetts 87.10 per cent.

In the North Atlantic division 69.07 per cent of the strikes were ordered by labor organizations, in the South Atlantic 61.67 per cent, in the North Central 69.83 per cent, in the South Central 68.20 per cent, and in the Western 71.46 per cent. In the North Atlantic division 90.58 per cent of the establishments involved were in strikes ordered by labor organizations, in the South Atlantic 80.08 per cent, in the North Central 90.86 per cent, in the South Central 88.51 per cent, and in the Western 93.22 per cent.

The series of three tables which follows shows by years, industries, and States and geographical divisions the percentage of establishments in which strikes ordered by labor organizations succeeded, succeeded partly, and failed, and the percentage of establishments in which strikes not ordered by labor organizations succeeded, succeeded partly, and failed.

The first table of the series shows these percentages by years:

RESULTS OF STRIKES ORDERED BY LABOR ORGANIZATIONS AND NOT SO ORDERED, BY YEARS, 1881 TO 1905.

[See Table VII, pages 490 and 491, for notes relating to strikes not reported whether ordered or not ordered, establishments in which strike was pending at the close of some one of the four investigations included in this report, and establishments in which result of strike was not reported.]

During the twenty-five year period, 1881 to 1905, the percentage of establishments in which strikes ordered by labor organizations were successful either wholly or in part was greatest in 1899, when the striking employees were reported as wholly successful in 76.33 per cent and as having gained a part of their demands in 14.19 per cent of the establishments in which strikes occurred; in the same year, the percentage of establishments in which strikes not ordered by labor organizations were wholly successful was 36.56 per cent, while they were partly successful in 14.92 per cent.

The percentage of establishments in which strikes ordered by labor organizations were successful either wholly or in part was smallest in 1891, when the strikers were wholly successful in 38.46 per cent and gained a part of their demands in 8.10 per cent of the establishments in which they struck; in the same year, the percentage of establishments in which strikes not ordered by labor organizations were wholly successful was 36.76 per cent and in addition a part of the demands. were gained in 11.68 per cent.

The percentage of establishments in which strikes succeeded either wholly or in part was greater in strikes ordered by labor organizations than in strikes not so ordered, except in two years, 1891 and 1894.

The table presenting the results by industries follows:

RESULTS OF STRIKES ORDERED BY LABOR ORGANIZATIONS AND NOT SO ORDERED, BY INDUSTRIES, 1881 TO 1905.
