RESULTS OF STRIKES ORDERED BY LABOR ORGANIZATIONS AND NOT SO

ORDERED, BY INDUSTRIES, 1881 TO 1903—Concluded.

[blocks in formation]

In 49 of the 82 industries the percentage of establishments in which the strike was wholly successful was greater where the strike was ordered by labor organizations than where not so ordered. If those strikes in which the strikers succeeded in winning a part of their demands be also considered, it will be seen that in all but 20 of the 82 industries the per cent of establishments in which strikes succeeded either wholly or in part was greater for the strikes ordered by labor organizations than for those not so ordered.

In strikes ordered by labor organizations the percentage of establishments which succeeded in building trades was 52.50 per cent, with 17.59 per cent partly successful; in men's clothing 76.23 per cent successful and 6.49 partly successful; in coal and coke 20.35 per cent successful and 32.11 partly successful; in cotton goods 13.86 per cent successful and 17.82 partly successful; and in foundries and machine shops 39.02 per cent successful and 17.26 partly successful. Of strikes not ordered by labor organizations the percentage of establishments in which the strike was successful in building trades was 50.95 per cent, with 9.01 per cent partly successful; in men's clothing 23.04 per cent successful and 6.45 per cent partly successful; in coal and coke 32.59 per cent successful and 11.04 per cent partly successful; in cotton goods 21.06 per cent successful and 8.16 partly successful; and in foundries and machine shops 27.69 per cent sucThe table presenting the results of strikes by States and geographical divisions follows:

Of the strikes ordered by labor organizations, the strikes were strikes occurred and partly successful in 10.37 per cent in New York; in Pennsylvania, wholly successful in 38.28 per cent and partly successful in 25.38 per cent; in Illinois, wholly successful in 53.08 per cent and partly successful in 11.89 per cent; in Ohio, wholly successful in 33.33 per cent and partly successful in 26.13 per cent; and in Massachusetts, wholly successful in 39.24 per cent and partly successful in 16.11 per cent.

The strikes not ordered by labor organizations were wholly successful in 41.47 per cent of the establishments and partly successful in 9.36 per cent in New York; in Pennsylvania, wholly successful in 30.23 per cent and partly successful in 10.79 per cent; in Illinois, wholly successful in 42.63 per cent and partly successful in 9.09 per cent; in Ohio, wholly successful in 31.03 per cent and partly successful in 10.82 per cent; and in Massachusetts, wholly successful in 30.00 per cent and partly successful in 9.61.

The presentation by geographical divisions shows that in the North Atlantic division the ordered strikes were wholly successful in 54.72 per cent of the establishments involved and partly successful in 15.80 per cent; in the South Atlantic, wholly successful in 34.46 per cent and partly successful in 23.19 per cent; in the North Central, wholly successful in 45.94 per cent and partly successful in 16.31 per cent; in the South Central, wholly successful in 29.15 per cent and partly successful in 12.67 per cent; and in the Western division, wholly successful in 42.01 per cent and partly successful in 11.71.

The strikes not ordered were wholly successful in the North Atlantic division in 32.84 per cent of the establishments involved and partly successful in 9.75 per cent; in the South Atlantic, wholly successful in 46.34 per cent and partly successful in 9.52 per cent; in the North Central, wholly successful in 34.25 per cent and partly successful in 9.50 per cent; in the South Central, wholly successful in 22.89 per cent and partly successful in 11.14 per cent; and in the Western division, wholly successful in 33.44 per cent and partly successful in 12.80 per cent. The percentage of wholly successful strikes was considerably greater in strikes ordered by labor organizations than in those not so ordered in each of the geographical divisions except the South Atlantic; the percentage of partly successful strikes was also greater in the strikes ordered by labor organizations, except in the Western division.

The three tables which follow present the number and per cent of strikers and employees thrown out of work in establishments involved in strikes ordered by labor organizations and not so ordered. The first of the three tables present these data by years, the second by The table by years follows:

ordered.)

[blocks in formation]

The percentage of strikers in strikes ordered by labor organizations varied from 60.91 per cent in 1881 to 91.90 per cent in 1904. The percentage of employees thrown out of work in establishments involved in strikes ordered by labor organizations varied from 56.17 per cent in 1881 to 90.62 per cent in 1904. The years 1894 and 1900 to 1904 inclusive show very large percentages of strikers and of employees thrown out of work in strikes ordered by labor organizations, but during 1905 lower percentages are again shown.

The table by industries follows:

BY INDUSTRIES, 1881 TO 1905. (See Table VI, pages 486 to 489, for notes relating to strikes not reported whether ordered or not ordered.)
