BEDUS, or BADUS, a mountain of Switzerland, in the cant. of the Grisons. Alt. 7,500 ft. The eastern branch of the Rhine rises on the E declivity of this mountain.

BEDWARDINE (ST. JOHN), a parish in Salop, 1 m. SW of Worcester, and extending into the city. Area 3,730 acres. Pop. 2,663.-The p. of B. St. Michael is wholly within the city of Worcester. Pop. 476.

BEDWAS, a parish partly in Monmouthshire, partly in Glamorganshire, 10 m. W by N of Newport. Area 4,340 acres. Pop. 800. The hamlet of Lower B. had a pop. of 284 in 1841; that of Upper B., 458. BEDWELTY, a parish in Monmouthshire, 12 m. NW of Newport. Area 15,440 acres. Pop. 22,413. BEDWIN (GREAT), a borough and market-town in Wiltshire, 71 m. W by S of London. Area of p. 10,420 acres. Pop. 2,178. It contains the tythings of Crofton and Wolfhall, East and West Grafton, Martin, Wexcombe, and Wilton.-The town of B. is 6 m. SE of Marlborough. It is a place of little trade or importance; but returned two members to parliament until disfranchised by the Reform act. BEDWIN (LITTLE), a parish in Wiltshire, 4 m. WSW of Hungerford. Area 3,770 acres. Pop. 597. BEDWORTH, a parish in Warwickshire, 34 m. S of Nuneaton. Area 2,240 acres. Pop. 4,253. BEEAWUL, a town of India, in the prov. of Candeish, at the confluence of the Surnuddi and Arki. BEEBAN-EL-MOLOOK, or BIBAN-EL-MULUK, [i. e. the Gate or the Vale of Kings'], a rocky ravine near the banks of the Nile, to the SW of Kornah, in which Belzoni discovered a magnificent sepulchre, supposed to be that of Psammis or Psammethis.

BEEBY, a parish of Leicestershire, 6 m. NE of Leicester, on the line of the Midland counties railway. Area 1,020 acres. Pop. 115.

BEECHEY ISLAND, an island in the Arctic seas, in N lat. 74° 45', off the coast of North Devon, at the SE point of the entrance of Wellington channel, and 1 m. WNW of Cape Riley. It would appear from traces found here that Sir John Franklin's missing expedition, with the view of attempting to make Behring's strait by a NW course, must have passed their first winter [1845-6] in the bay or strait between Cape Riley and this island.

BEEDER, or BIDER, a prov. of Hindostan, in the Nizam's dominions, in the Deccan; bounded on the N by Berar and Aurungabad; on the E by Hyderabad and Gundwana; on the S by Hyderabad; on the W by Bejapur and Aurungabad. It is divided into the seven districts of Calberga, Naldrug, Akulcotta, Calliany, B., Nandere, and Patri. The surface is generally hilly, but nowhere rises into mountains; and the soil is productive. The Manjera and the Godavery are the principal rivers.-Its cap., of the same name, is in N lat. 17° 49', E long. 77° 46′, 73 m. NW of Hyderabad. Its walls embrace a circuit of 6 m., and it contains some faint traces of ancient splendour, but the place is of no great strength or importance. The majority of the pop. of this prov. are Hindus. The Moguls conquered it towards the close of the 17th cent.; and the Nizam of Hyderabad | wrested it from the successors of Aurungzebe in 1717.

BEEF ISLAND, one of the smaller Virgin islands, in the W Indies, between Dog island on the W, and Tortola on the E. It is 5 m. in length, and 1 m. in breadth. Also an island at the mouth of the Terminos lagune, in the SE part of the bay of Campeachy. BEEFELDEN, a town of Hessen-Darmstadt, in the circle of Starkenburg, on the Mumling. Pop. 2,600.

BEEFORD, a parish in the E. R. of Yorkshire, 7 m. ESE of Great Driffield. Area 5.270 acres. Pop. 977, of whom 766 were in the township of B.

BEEKMANTOWN, a township in Clinton co., in the state of New York, 8 m. N of Plattsburg. Pop. 2,769.

BEELERSVILLE, a village in the state of Arkansas, U. S., in Carroll co., near Crooked creek. There are numerous springs about 5 m. to the S of this v.

BEELEY, a chapelry in the p. of Bakewell, Derbyshire, 34 m. E of Bakewell. Area 3,250 acres. Pop. 406.

BEEMASIR, a town in the district of Gogadeva, in Rajasthan.

BEEMSTER POLDER, a fertile district in the prov. of North Holland, in the kingdom of Holland, lying to the NW of Edam, and N of Purmerend, nearly in the centre of the prov. It is in the basin of a drained marsh, extending to about 8,000 acres, and has a pop. of 2,500. Fine cattle are reared in this district.

BEEMTHAL, a beautiful mountain valley of Northern India, in Kumaon, at an alt. of 3,200 ft. above the sea, and 2,700 above the plain of Rohilcund. It is on the road from Ruderpur to Ramgur.

BEENHAM, a parish in Berkshire, 8 m. WSW of Reading. Area 1,890 acres. Pop. 421. BEENMAIL, or BHINMAL, a town of India, in Rajasthan, midway between Jalor and Sankor. Pop. 6,000.

BEENSHALLIG, a small island of Denmark, in the prov. of Sleswick, S of Gröde.

BEER, a river of Wurtemberg, in the Schwarzwald, an affluent of the Danube. BEER. See BIR.

BEERALOO, a village of Sinde, near the 1. bank of the Indus, 4 m. S of Roree.

BEER-ALSTON, a town in the p. of Bec-Ferris, Devonshire, 6 m. SSW of Tavistock, on the river Tamar. It is a small place, but returned two members to parliament till disfranchised by the Reform act. There are lead-mines in the vicinity.

BEERBERG, a mountain of Germany, in the BEEDING, a parish in Sussex, 1 m. E of Stey-principality of Gotha-Altenburg, the highest summit ning, intersected by the Adur river. Area 3,500 of the Thuringerwald chain. Alt. 2,985 ft.
