Mr. Smith moved to lay said resolution on the table.

The President put the question whether the Senate would agree to said motion, and it was decided in the negative.

The President then put the question whether the Senate would agree to said resolution, and it was decided in the affirmative. Mr. Brandreth offered the following resolution :

Resolved, That 2,000 extra copies of the report of the Superintendent of the Banking Department, on the condition of the Savings Banks of the State, be printed for the use of the Senate.

Ordered, That said resolution be referred to the committee on public printing.

On motion of Mr. Stow,

Resolved, That the petition of David Darrow and others, to authorise the construction of an embankment across Eaton brook, be referred to the Canal Board for their opinion thereon.

The Senate then resolved itself into a committee of the whole, and proceeded to the consideration of the general orders, being the bills entitled as follows:

"An act for the payment of money to John A. Dodge, attorney of Silas Ball, for interest on drafts drawn by the Canal Commissioners on the Auditor, and protested."

"An act to amend an act entitled 'An act to incorporate the village of Warsaw,' passed April 17, 1843."

"An act to determine the claim of James Hay to the real property, and the proceeds thereof, of John G. Leake, deceased."

After some time spent thereon, the President resumed the chair, and Mr. Brandreth, from said committee, reported in favor of the passage of the first named bill, without amendment; which report was agreed to.

Ordered, That said bill be engrossed for a third reading.

Mr. Brandreth, from the same committee, reported in favor of the passage of the second and third named bills, with amendments; which reports were agreed to.

Ordered, That said bills be engrossed for a third reading.

The Senate then resolved itself into a committee of the whole, and proceeded to the consideration of the general orders, being the bill entitled as follows:

"An act to extend the time for the payment of taxes in the city of Albany."

"An act to amend the charter of the village of Saratoga Springs."

"An act to amend an act entitled 'An act for the prevention of frauds upon the canal revenue,' passed April 14, 1855."

After some time spent thereon, the President resumed the chair, and Mr. Laflin, from said committee, reported in favor of the passage of the first and second named bills, with amendments; which reports were agreed to.

Ordered, That said bills be engrossed for a third reading

Mr. Laflin, from the same committee, reported in favor of the passage of the last named bill, without amendment, which report was agreed to.

Ordered, That said bill be engrossed for a third reading.

The President named as the select committee on the bill for the registration of births, marriages and deaths, Messrs. Scott, J. A. Willard and Pratt.

Also, as the select committee on the bill for the purity of the elective franchise, Messrs. W. A. Wheeler, Spinola, Johnson, Diven and Ely.

A message from the Assembly was received and read, requesting the concurrence of the Senate to the following entitled bill: "An act to essablish and amend the charter of the village of Deposit;" which was read the first time, and by unanimous consent was also read the second time, and referred to the committee on the incorporation of cities and villages.

On motion of Mr. Halsted, the Senate adjourned.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1858.

The Senate met pursuant to adjournment.

The journal of yesterday was read and approved.

The President presented the reports of the New-York and Harlem, Buffalo and State Line, and Lake Ontario and New-York railroad companies, in reply to Senate resolution of Feb. 4, 1858; which were read and referred to the committee on railroads.

Mr. Johnson presented the report of the Albany and Susquehanna railroad, in reply to Senate resolution of Feb. 4, 1858; which was read and referred to the committee on railroads.

Mr. Boardman presented a petition of 350 inhabitants of Ontario county, to suspend navigation on the Sabbath; which was read and referred to the committee on canals.

Also, a petition of Wm. Arnott and Calvin Hall, for relief, on account of damages sustained from surplus water of canals; which was read and referred to the committee on claims.

Also, a petition of E. J. Tyler and others, for a law regulating freight charges on railroads, so as to have uniform charges throughout the year; which was read and referred to the committee on railroads.

Also, a petition of manufacturers of flour, at Seneca Falls, upon the subject of railway freight charges; which was read and referred to the committee on railroads.

Mr. J. D. Willard presented a petition of 53 voters of Rensselaer county, for a suspension of navigation on the canals on Sunday; which was read and referred to the committee on canals.

Mr. Pratt, from the joint library committee, to which was referred the resolution relative to books and documents in possession of the various departments of government, which have not been appropriated or disposed of, reported in writing, and offered the following resolution:

Resolved, (if the Assembly concur,) That the residue of the copies of the Census Report of 1855, after the distribution ordered by the joint resolution which passed the Senate on the 25th inst., be placed in custody of the Regents of the University, subject to the further pleasure of the Legislature.

Ordered, That said resolutions be laid on the table.

Mr. Mather offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That 200 extra copies of the report of the joint library committee on books and documents belonging to the State, be printed for the use of the Senate.

Ordered, That said resolution be referred to the committee on public printing.

Mr. Pratt, from the committee on engrossed bills, reported as correctly engrossed the bills entitled as follows:

Mr. Halsted, from the committee on the incorporation of cities and villages, to which was referred the bill entitled "An act for the protection of gas consumers, and to appoint an inspector of gas meters for the cities of New-York and Brooklyn;" reported in favor of the passage of the same, which report was agreed to, and said bill committed to the committee of the whole.

Mr. Mandeville, from the committee on roads and bridges, to which was referred the petition of inhabitants of Washington co., for building a bridge across the Hudson river, reported a bill entitled "An act to provide for the construction of a free bridge across the Hudson river between the towns of Fort Edward and Moreau;" which was read the first time, and by unanimous consent was also read the second time, and committed to the committee of the whole.

Mr. Ames, from the committee on commerce and navigation, to which was referred the petition of citizens of Troy, for a law prohibiting obstructions in the River at Troy, reported a bill entitled "An act to prevent obstruction by rafts in the Hudson river, opposite the city of Troy;" which was read the first time, and by unanimous consent was also read the second time, and committed to the committee of the whole.

Mr. Loveland, from the committee on State prisons, to which was referred the petition of the Croton Aqueduct department of the city of New-York, for payment of moneys due them for Croton water, reported in writing.

Mr. Loveland, from the committee on public printing, to which was referred the resolution to print extra copies of the majority and minority reports of the select committee on the repeal of the Metropolitan Police bill, reported in favor of the adoption of the following resolution :

Resolved, That 2,000 extra copies of the reports of the majority and minority of the select committee on the repeal of the Metropolitan Police bill, be printed for the use of the Senate.

Mr. Brandreth moved to amend by striking out "two" and inserting "four."

Mr. Noxon, from the committee on the judiciary, to which was recommitted the bill entitled "An act to establish office hours for the sheriff's office in the county Kings;" reported adversely thereto and in favor of the adoption of the following resolution, which was agreed to:

Resolved, That the bill ought not to pass.

Mr. Noxon, from the committee on the judiciary, to which was referred the bill entitled "An act relative to certain fees in courts of record, in the city of New-York;" reported in favor of the passage of the same, which report was agreed to, and said bill committed to the committee of the whole.

Mr. J. D. Willard, from the committee on the judiciary, to which was referred the bill entitled "An act in relation to the appointment of commissioners to take private property for public purposes;" reported in favor of the passage of the same, which report was agreed to and said bill committed to the committee of the whole.

Mr. Brandreth, from the committee on medical societies, to which was referred the bill entitled "An act to improve the public health, and establish a Sanitary Police in the city of NewYork;" reported the same for the consideration of the Senate; and said bill was committed to the committee of the whole.

Mr. Loveland, from the committee on public printing, to which was referred the resolution to print extra copies of the report of the Superintendent of the Bank Department, on the condition of the Saving Banks of the State, reported in favor of the adoption of the following resolution, which was agreed to, viz:

Resolved, That 1,000 extra copies of the report of the Superintendent of the Banking department, on the condition of the Savings Banks of the State, be printed for the use of the Senate.

A message from the Assembly was received and read, requesting the concurrence of the Senate to the following entitled bills:

"An act to enable the electors of the town of Watervleit to vote by districts for the election of town officers;" which was read the first time, and by unanimous consent was also read the second time, and referred to the committee on the internal affairs of towns and counties.

"An act to incorporate the Putnam hook and ladder company, No. 1, of the village of Cold Spring;" which was read the first time, and by unanimous consent was also read the second time, and referred to the committee on the incorporation of cities and villages.

"An act to change the name of Francis Caroline Fox and Rosina Holton to Francis Caroline Townsend, Anna Hazen Townsend, and to confirm the name assumed by Ingham Fox Townsend;" which was read the first time, and by unanimous consent was also read the second time, and referred to the committee on the judiciary.

A message from the Assembly was received and read, informing that they had non-concurred in the passage of the following entitled bill:
