PREFACE.

THE Editor has the satisfaction to inform his readers, that

the sale of the POLITICAL REVIEW has so increased during the past six months, that those apprehensions which he expressed in the Preface to the preceding volumes are at length dissipated. The work he now believes is well established, and there is reason to hope, from present appearances, that its circulation will be still more extended: he, however, trusts that the friends to those principles of POLITICAL, CIVIL, and RELIGIOUS liberty, which are maintained and defended in the POLITICAL REVIEW, will not relax in their exertions to promote its further success. The aspect of public affairs is daily growing more and more alarming. Every attempt of our rulers to circumscribe the limits of the French empire, and to diminish the influence of that extraordinary man placed at its head, has terminated in the extension of the former, and in the increase of the latter. At such a portentous period, it is the incumbent duty of every man to fortify his mind with the best of principles, and thereby prepare himself to act the part which may be assigned him by Providence, and a CHRISTIAN. with the dignity of a MAN, a BRITON,
