ALTHOUGH it might be supposed that the death of my brother, at his advanced age, would not surprise or deeply affect any one, yet, as we had been the only survivors of a numerous family, and as he had now left me the only survivor, the intelligence of his death produced a shock, which I had not anticipated. I felt a depressing, lonely feeling, which I will not undertake to describe; and I at once resorted to the numerous letters which had passed between us, and spent the day in reading them. From this I found relief: It seemed like a renewal of our long, intimate fraternal intercourse. This suggested the idea of writing his biography, before it was suggested by others.
