gelöst ;

(103)

Tell me, friend, what have I acquired of the riches McCarthy of this world?-Nothing. What has fleeting time left (145) in my hands? - Nothing. I am the torch of joy, but once the torch is extinct I exist no longer. I am the cup of Jamshid, but the cup once broken I exist no

more.

See! from the world what profit have I gained?
What fruitage of my life in hand retained?

What use is Jamshed's goblet, once 'tis crushed? What pleasure's torch, when once its light has waned.

For the sake of the reference to "Jamshed's goblet," I quoted Whinfield, 133, in illustration of FitzGerald, V, p. 11.

Whinfield (133)

[blocks in formation]

[blocks in formation]

Was bedeutet nun die Zeit mir, die dahingeronnen?

nichts.

Heedless man, thy fleshly body is naught, yon vault built up of seven shining heavens is naught. Give thyself up to all delight in this kingdom of misrule, for our life is only bound to it for a moment, and that moment itself is nothing.

O foolish one! this moulded earth is naught,
This particoloured vault of heaven is naught;
Our sojourn in this seat of life and death
Is but one breath, and what is that but naught?

Unwissender Mensch ! Dieser Leib, aus

gewoben, ist Nichts;

Staub Bodenstedt (III. 7)

keit eu'r Leben;

If in this life you feasted full, what then? Suppose McCarthy the latest of your days has come, what then? If you have lived a hundred happy years and have yet a hundred years to live, what then?

(461)

Suppose the world goes well with you, what then?
When life's last page is read and turned, what then?
Suppose you live a hundred years of bliss,
Yea, and a hundred years besides, what then?

Whinfield

(415)

[blocks in formation]

Suppose you hold the world in fee, what then?

When life's last page is read and turned, what then?

You may outlive the present century,

And haply see the next, but what comes then?

[blocks in formation]

Nimm an, verronnen wäre dir das süsse Leben -was

Whinfield

(50)

You have wandered upon the face of the earth, but all that you have known is nothing, all that you have seen, all that you have heard, is nothing. Though you travel from world's end to world's end, all that is nothing, although you abide in a corner of your house, all that is nothing.

You see the world, but all you see is naught,
And all you say, and all you hear is naught,
Naught the four quarters of the mighty earth,
The secrets treasured in your chamber naught.

Hast seen the world? All thou hast seen is naught,
All thou hast said, all thou hast heard or wrought,

*(16)

Sweep the horizon's verge from pole to pole, t is vain;

Even all thou hast in secret done is naught.

Du sahst die Welt, doch was im Weltenall
Zu Deinen Augen kam, ist blosser Schein;
Wie ihn Dein Ohr vernahm, ist blosser Schein;
Von einem Ende dieser Welt zum andern

Trug Dich Dein Fuss

Was darin wundersam, ist blosser Schein.

Bodenstedt (III. 6)

(138)

This ignorance extends beyond "the veil." There are several fine Rubáiyát which might also serve to illustrate Fitz-Gerald's 32nd stanza :
