TO THE READER.

It is hoped that the passages here collected from the Bible, presenting at one view all the scattered precepts, warnings, and promises directly bearing on the subject of almsgiving, may be found a useful manual, which, while it would encourage the charitable to persevere in their "labour of love," may tend, under God's blessing, to put it into the hearts of those who have hitherto neglected this duty, to consider their ways, and "open their hand wider to their brethren the poor and needy in their land."

CHAPTER XV.

1. At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release.

2. And this is the manner of the release: Every creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called the Lord's release.

7. If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother:
