SUBSTITUTE FOR HOUSE FILE NO. 169-BY THUENEN.

A bill for an act to amend section five hundred and ten (510) of the code, relating to the compensation of deputy sheriffs.

Be it Enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Iowa:

Section 1. That section five hundred and ten (510) of the code, be amended by adding thereto after the word "office," in the last line thereof, the following:

Except that in counties having a population of 45,000 or over the board of supervisors may allow the sheriff and his deputies an amount in addition to the receipts of the office sufficient to make the salaries of sheriff and deputies fixed in this section and section 509, if the receipts of the office do not equal such salaries.

SPEAKER-Your committee on Compensation of Public Officers, to whom was referred House file No. 278, a bill for an act to classify and fix the salaries of the officers, guards and employes of the penitentiaries at Anamosa and Ft. Madison, Iowa, beg leave to report that they have had the same under consideration and have instructed me to report the same back to the House with the recommendation that the same be indefinitely postponed.

SPEAKER-Your committee on Compensation of Public Officers, to whom was referred House file No. 255, a bill for an act to amend section 2583 of chapter 17, title 12 of the code, relating to the compensation of the secretary of the state board of medical examiners, beg leave to report that they have had the same under consideration and have instructed me to report the same back to the House with the recommendation that the same be amended by striking out the last line of section 1 and inserting in lieu thereof, the words "exceed two hundred dollars ($200) per annum and," and that when so amended that the same do pass.

In compliance with the resolution introduced by Representative Head, by request, asking for certain information from members of the executive council, in regard to their connection with building and loan associations and insurance companies, I beg leave to state that I have never been directly or indirectly interested in any building and loan association of this or any other state. I am president of The National Life and Trust Insurance company and also a stockholder in same. My salary and all compensation for the year 1899 was $400. The executive council has no jurisdiction whatever over life insurance companies.
