Whereas, the Canal Board of this State has adopted and forwarded to this Legislature, a preamble and resolutions, of which the following, are copies..

At a meeting of the Canal Board, the following preamble and resolutions were offered by Mr. Spaulding, and were unanimously adopted:

Whereas, Grants of the public lands for building railroads, eanals, and other public purposes, have been made by Congress to western states and territories, to a large amount, and several other propositions are now pending for still further grants to be made for similar purposes,

That this Board recognizes the principle that all the States have a right to participate in a fair distribution of the public lands, upon just and equitable terms, if such distribution is to be made; yet as the policy has, to some extent prevailed, and may still further be adopted by Congress, to grant such lands for internal improvements and other public purposes, the enlargement of the Erie canal, in which so many of the western States are interested, is an object worthy of consideration in any such distribution;

Resolved, That this Board deem it expedient and proper, that the Legislature make an application to Congress on behalf of the State of New-York, for a grant of a portion of the public lands to aid in the enlargement of the Erie canal, if grants are made to other States for similar objects;

Resolved, That a copy of the foregoing preamble and resolution be furnished by the clerk of this Board to the Senate and Assembly, and their speedy action upon it be respectfully requested.

Therefore, Resolved, (if the Senate concur,) That our Senators and Representatives in Congress be requested, in case grants of land are made by Congress to aid the works of internal improvement in other States, to endeavor to procure a grant of a portion of the public domain to this State, to aid in the completion of its great works of internal improvement.

Resolved, (if the Senate concar,) That copies of the foregoing preamble and resolutions be transmitted by the Governor of this State, to the Senators and Representatives of this State, in the Congress of the United States.
