"There he sat, and, as I thought, expounding the law and the prophets, until on drawing a little nearer, I found he was only expatiating on the merits of a brown horse."-BRACEBRIDGE HALL.

WAY BILL:

-The late Lord Palmerston and Mr. J. F. Herring-The
Cambridgeshire Day.

PHRE
HREE members of the Jockey Club have died this year. Charles
Grevile, sage in council; Lord Strathmore, "the best steeplechaser
of them 'a ;" and now Lord Palmerston, the "Cupid" of the old gene-
ration, and the "Old Pam" of the new. He owed his birth indirectly,
as the story of his father's second wooing goes, to the fall of a horse;
and certainly, to the end of his days, he was a steady if not an en-
thusiastic lover of them. "He rode hunting, as he did everything
else, like a gentleman, not like a madman," said Mr. Davis of him,
in his own quiet, incisive way; and no one knew more of him in the
field. The claims of office would not permit him to hunt regularly;
but from 1825 to 1848 he was often among the scarlets with The
Queen's, and generally "hailed" from Windsor Castle. He was a
good horseman, with a fine hand and eye to hounds, and would pull
down with his saddle fully fourteen stone. His horses were always
first-class, and he was particularly well appointed, with a servant to
match. The April meets in the New Forest seldom lacked that ever-
cheery presence; and he often recurred to the day when he rode over
from Broadlands, and found Mr. Davis, with Mr. Assheton Smith
and sixteen other M. F. H.'s round him, in the heart of that noble
wild. His lordship, true to himself, could be "happy with either "
stag or fox, whenever hounds could run. The last meet he ever
attended with the former was in '48, at Bolton's Bench, near Lynd-
hurst; and his last fox-hunt was in the middle of last season, with
The Hursley. A considerate friend shouted to him, when he had
chosen his line, that there was a gate lower down. "Is there?" he
replied, "but there go the hounds;" and with an energy which eighty
winters had failed to chill, he chose the fence instead. His great
coeval, Mr. Davis, was the huntsman of his heart. His lordship
seldom met the Master of the Buckhounds without charging him with
a kind message; and some of those who were at the Prince's wed-
ding remember how quickly he espied the veteran in his allotted seat,
as he walked down the nave in his robes as Knight of the Garter,
and, stepping blithely aside to him, shook him by the hand, and had
a word or two for "auld lang syne.'

Like George IV., he "saw through a horse like a hoop," and dearly loved a quiet stroll through the stalls at Tattersall's. He was never there on high days; and for many a year past the Newmarket people can only charge their memories with having seen him once or twice among them. With jockey club business, he did not concern himself; and, in fact, except, perhaps, on the Derby and Ascot Cup days, he seldom joined his turf peers. His last ride to Epsom and back, from the Kingston-station, was in Macaroni's year; and there he was
