And I have been led to this conclusion, not hastily, not without due deliberation, but by a calm and patient investigation of the whole subject: looking at war in all its bearings-its influence upon individuals and nations. And having been converted, as I trust, from the war spirit, and been brought to realize that the world is my country and all mankind my brethren, and that it is not lawful in God's government for me to kill any portion of his family; and having come to the conclusion that I will not kill any one to please this man or that man, this party or that party, I am desirous of converting others to the same anti-war faith, that we may now begin the Millennium day, and commence beating our swords into ploughshares and our spears into pruning hooks.

It is somewhat amusing to hear christians converse on this subject of War. "O," say they "it will do very well to practice your doctrine of overcoming evil with good, when men are prepared for it-when society shall be brought into that perfect state of organization, that will return good for evil. But men now are so wicked and corrupt, we must resort to physical force to defend ourselves." These very christian professors do not seem to understand that the world will never be converted from the war spirit, unless they go

to work and set an example for others to follow. Their conduct is therefore like that of the professed friend to Temperance-says he, "Landlord, this doctrine of Temperance is a very good thing-I admire the principles of its advocates, and I think when all leave off drinking, and alcoholic drinks are banished from the land, that we shall have a glorious state of things.-I say landlord, give me a glass of brandy and water." The man does not even think that he is supporting the rum drinking business, and encouraging men to adhere to their cups; and that were others to follow his example, the glorious state of things that he says will follow King Alcohol's destruction, will never take place. So with those who think Peace; yea, universal, will be a fine thing, but who refuse to enlist under its banner TO-DAY-who believe a little fighting for the present to be good-such men are just as inconsistent as the lover of Temperance, who thinks there will be a beautiful state of things, when all men stop drinking, and who drinks more or less every day himself. Such is the consistency of man!

My friends, I profess to know of no other way for bringing about the reign of Temperance, than for each one of us to stop drinking now, and commence exerting our whole influence in favor

of Temperance principles. Neither can I see how Peace can be established in the earth, until men stop killing and commence obeying the precepts of Christ to love our enemies, and to do good to those who despitefully use us. When therefore, an individual is brought to see that all war is wrong, and desires the reign of universal peace, it it is his duty to oppose war zealously and manfully, that his views may be extended from individual to individual-from town to townfrom state to state-and from nation to nationuntil the whole world becomes subject to the Prince of Peace.

Hence, I repeat, having been brought to see that we cannot be christians and use carnal weapons, no, not even in self defence, I deem it my duty as a man and a christian, to take up this subject in its various bearings, and present you with the evidence that convinced me of the wickedness and inutility of this system of blood. And here I would remark, that I am particularly anxious that Universalists should understand this subject, and be led to practice the peace principles. Why? From the simple fact that it harmonizes with their doctrine, and that there is nothing in its opposite that will blend with it. We know partialism divides the human family, and hangs, imprisons, chains, and enslaves them,

but thank God, we are not Partialists, (that is, in faith, if we are in practice.). Now it is perfectly consistent for Partialists to be partial in their dealings with their fellow men. Why? Because God commands them to imitate him, and if they believe that He will separate his great family, and make war, yes, war, endless upon the larger portion of them; it is certainly their duty to make war upon and enslave the same class here! But Universalists profess to reject this whole system of Partialism. They believe. that God cannot possibly injure any of his children-no, not even the worst portion of thembut that he does and will ever continue to love and provide for them-that he will always open his liberal hand and satisfy the wants of his dependent creatures. And they are therefore urged by the very necessity of their faith and being, to treat all who bear the impress of humanity, with kindness and respect, and never suffer their passions to govern them in making war upon any class of them. This, I understand, is the teaching of Universalism; and it is by its influence that our world is to be regenerated, and brought into that close acquaintance with God and his Christ, when all shall be perfected in love and holiness. Partialism has tried to reform the world for the last 1500 years, but has utterly fail

ed. It has divided the human family into sects and parties, and deluged our earth with blood. Millions have been sacrificed upon the accursed altar of partiality; and the rivers of the earth have run purple with the blood of God's unoffending children. I say then, I am anxious that Universalism shall prevail, and that those who profess to be its followers, should understand that it prohibits all war, malice and ill will. Let us no longer practice Partialism, and seek to destroy the weaker portion of our fellow men. Let others kill, if killing is to be done, who believe in it, and let us seek to know the Lord, whom to know is life eternal.

In the present discourse, I shall endeavor to show the dreadful nature of war-its influence upon our race-the cost to sustain it, and its utter inadequacy to protect us from aggression. In the second discourse, I shall show a more powerful weapon with which to overcome enemies, than steel and gunpowder, Paixan guns, or continental rifles; even the sword of the Spirit, or in other words, the moral power of the Gospel, and urge its adoption in preference to the system of death, that now shadows forth our shame and disgrace as a professed christian nation !

And what has war done towards depopulating
