The following is a statement of the date of each accident, the place where it occurred, the train, the cause and the extent of the injuries inflicted upon each person, and the name of such person, as follows: On the 7th of December, 1865, and before the road was in operation, as a construction train with gravel cars, and about 50 laborers, was backing down a grade in Scriba, a lot of cows ran out from some bushes, up on to the track before the cars and some of them were run over.. One or two of the cars were thrown from the track, and the following persons killed or injured: Wm. Smith, brakeman, killed; John King, laborer, seriously injured, compound fracture of right arm above the elbow, and severe contusion of the head; George Welch, Oliver Borzan, Joseph Paukan, Alexander Beauvan, Louis Kennell, Thomas Nedge, Frank Lespore and Frederick Mann, laborers, were slightly bruised and injured. The accident did not arise from the carelessness or negligence of any person in the employment of the corporation. * This item embraces expenses chargeable to this Company by Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburgh Company, to Sept. 30 for operating the road.
