Printers' stones, with photo-lithos for coloured printing in three or four colours.

Dry paint, in paper sheets, used by bookbinders for colouring stamped type.

Sheepskin (leather), dyed, for purse and bag making.

Agricultural
Machinery

In a recent report, H.M. Consul-General at Odessa states that the most considerable British import into that port is agricultural machinery. British firms now make harvesters light enough to suit Russian draught animals, but the price is considerably higher than that of similar machines made in the United States of America. of principal American makers in 1902 the prices were brought down, and reduced a further 10 per cent. in 1903. The best American 6-foot binder with bundle carrier is sold at Odessa retail at 340 r., a 5-foot reaper at 175 r., a 5-foot mower at 140 r. The last named is the only instrument which pays duty.

The terms of payment demanded by British and German firmstaking a sale of 6,000 r. worth of agricultural machinery-are arranged to fall as follows:

In another part of his report, the Consul-General remarks that the agricultural machinery industry of Odessa has made noticeable progress, but the increase is to be attributed to the growth of one or at most two firms, the rest having remained stationary or ceased operations. The number of factories has fallen from five to three, one large firm having closed its works. As before, the principal item turned out consisted of ploughs, while some reapers were also manufactured. Except in regard to the manufacture of ploughs, Russian firms are unprogressive, and this allows scope for foreign enterprise, and foreign firms (British, American, German) hold the field. (Foreign Office, Annual Series, 3,128.)

H.M. Consul at Kieff reports that there was a great demand for agricultural machinery in 1902, and in steam threshing sets so far as that district is concerned. The United Kingdom did the largest trade. It is also satisfactory to note that at the district agricultural exhibition, held at Berditscheff during the autumn of 1902, where most of the Continental makers of steam sets were exhibitors, the highest possible award for steam sets, viz., the "Diplome d'Honneur," was awarded to a British firm. Nevertheless, the German makers of steam threshing machinery are gradually forcing their way in this branch of trade, and although their steam threshing machinery cannot yet be said to equal what the British maker puts upon the Russian market, the willingness of the Germans to grant easier conditions of payment greatly aids them in the extension of their trade. German makers now extend
