Mr. Moulton moved that when the House adjourns to-day it be to meet on Wednesday next.

Mr. Collins made the point of order that the said motion was not in order, for the reason that it had just been voted on and rejected.

The Speaker pro tempore sustained the said point of order, on the ground that the said motion to adjourn over was not in order to be repeated unless other business had intervened, and held that the motion to adjourn was not intervening business.

Mr. Hammond moved that when the House adjourns to-day it be to meet on Thursday next; which motion was disagreed to.

Mr. William H. Hatch moved that the House adjourn;

Pending which,

The Speaker pro tempore, by unanimous consent, laid before the House the following messages this day received from the President of the United States; which were ordered to be printed and referred as follows, viz:

To the House of Representatives:

In response to the resolution of the House of Representatives of January 28, 1885, "that the President be respectfully requested to transmit to this House a copy of the recent appeal of Fitz-John Porter, together with the accompanying papers," I transmit herewith a copy of a communication from Fitz-John Porter, addressed to the President, from Morristown, New Jersey, under date of October 14, 1884, together with copies of the accompanying papers.

CHESTER A. ARTHUR.

To the Senate and House of Representatives:

So the House refused to adjourn.

Mr. William H. Hatch moved that when the House adjourns to-day it be to meet on Wednesday next.

Mr. Collins made the point of order that the said motion was not in order, having just been rejected.

The Speaker pro tempore overruled the said point of order, on the ground that under the well-established practice of the House, the said motion having been rejected, was not again in order until there had been "intervening business," and that the motion to adjourn over to Thursday, submitted by Mr. Hammond, was such intervening business. The question then recurring upon the motion of Mr. Hatch to adjourn over,

And being put, viz:

Will the House agree thereto?

It was decided in the negative.

So the House refused to adjourn over.

Mr. Blount moved that the House adjourn ;

And the question being put, viz:

Will the House agree thereto ?
