subjects, she will furnish Practical Instructions in the Working Of Hair, illustrated by various Patterns. These will be followed by papers on the INDIAN RICE SHELL-Work, with explanatory Engravings. Mrs. Pullan will continue to furnish Designs for Fancy NEEDLEWORK, with Instructions, besides a series of papers on FASHIONS AND TASTE IN DRESS, which will appear at Monthly intervals. Papers on the elementary branches of NEEDLEWORK, specially addressed to our JUVENILE FRIENDS, will also appear from time to time. The Chess DEPARTMENT remains under the superintendence of HERR HARRWITZ, who will also contribute some ELEMENTARY INSTRUCTIONS in this Popular game of skill. To these will be added occasional anecdotal papers on Chess and Chessplayers, collected by Herr Harrwitz during his long career as a proficient in the Art, and which cannot fail to create interest. HOUSEHOLD MATTERS, BIOGRAPHY, Sketches of NATURAL HISTORY, PRACTICAL SCIENCE, POETRY, and MISCELLANEOUS READING, will continue to be of the same varied, select, and useful character as formerly, while all correspondence, contributions, and hints as to the general management of the Work, will be carefully considered and responded to by the Conductors. As a COMPANION to the FAMILY FRIEND, the Proprietors of the “FAMILY TUTOR” announce their intention of effecting some important improvements in that work. It has been part of the plan, that in each volume some prominent branch of Education shall be the leading topic. With these subjects, however, it is now resolved to present some new features, especially addressed to the purpose of improving Home Education, and the Proprietors have determined on a considerable Enlargement of that work, without any increase of Price. The addition to the work consists in a more systematic arrangement of the materials, with a view to making the series more practically and permanently useful. It is intended, after the conclusion of the present Volume, that sixteen pages in every Number shall be devoted to directions in the art of Teaching, and other matters of interest to the Practical Teacher, whether for Home, Educational, or Professional Reading. A separate paging will distinguish this portion of the Work, and the Volume will extend through the whole year instead of being completed once in Six Months, as at present. The other portion of the Tutor will be devoted to the production of a Series of Books, by the best Authors, on the various branches of knowledge required for Home Education, and for reading aloud to the Family Circle. The paging of these books will also be separate, so that when the subject is completed, title pages will be given to each series, which can thus be detached from the FAMILY Tutor.
